"Baley's grip tightened convulsively on his fork. 'Are you sure?' he asked automatically, and as he said it, he realized the uselessness of the question. You don't ask a computer if it is sure of the answer it disgorges; not even a computer with arms and legs." - The Caves of Steel (1953). We are not there yet.

Someone in our street drives this thing to work. That would for me be a reason to get my drivers license. Alas, at 55 I'm still a happy bicycler and public transport surfer.

Analyzing for a few days bot activity in our institutional repository I understand why some repos block whole countries: because it is easy, not because it is effective. The majority of unidentified bots are from 🇺🇸..of course no one willing to block that one.

New paper by Abalkina et al about the sorry state of paper mills in engineering conference proceedings. Since 2022 the researchers found hunderds of suspect papers per year in IEEE conferences. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2604.22458

At #GraspOS finally a conference where my ears don't ring with the zillion mentions of #AI #LLM. I can play bullshit bingo without a winner.

Cloud products are frustrating, certainly in library context. I feel more like a experimental physicist than just following the documentation or helpdesk. #exlibris I am sure you have a great product, but the documentation isn't. Fragmentary, out dated, ambiguous. Some ideas are great, some are just a kludge.

Glad to see my Mastodon home, openbiblio.social, back online after a long outage. Alas, some information was lost. This also shows the need for decentralized solutions to preserve (social) media content. https://communities.surf.nl/regie-op-data/artikel/using-mastodon-to-keep-track-of-your-scholarly-output

Some idiot bought the wayback machine .com domain. Put a clone design of the original version, but one that links to porn websites. It even promoted itself to the top of my DDG search result page for "wayback machine" https://duckduckgo.com/?q=wayback+machine

What is happening? The shares of all the major scholarly communication players (Elsevier, Kluwer, Thonson Reuters, Clarivate) took this week a major hit. A shark being eating by a bigger shark?

That was the internal defense of my PHD. I thought to learn a secret handshake or a blessing with a sword. But, no. "We see you back for a public defense on Friday March 27th".

Ask Clarivate not to put secret keys in permalinks, the vote is open: https://ideas.exlibrisgroup.com/forums/308176-primo/suggestions/51095134-publish-the-algorithm-to-create-permalinks (i know, still not a cool uri, but a smal win)
