I thought about it for a while. And I think my main point wouldn’t even be on a factual level. I mean sure, AI is bad and all. For many different reasons. But most importantly, PieFed is a free and open-source project and literally nobody here likes AI contributions. A good chunk of the userbase dislikes it. Seems the developers all(?) dislike it. And there isn’t anyone around willing to review and merge these things. So I don’t see any reason to argue here. Just don’t send in PRs with stuff eve...

I'll just open them up to the internet via an nginx reverse proxy. Make sure sign up is disabled in the applications, and something blocks people from brute-forcing passwords. Pretty sure Nextcloud comes like that per default. And I'll do updates. And see if I can run stuff in containers or seperate users so in the unlikely case something happens, access to one of my services doesn't compromise the entire server. Lots of other people use VPNs though. Like Wireguard, Netbird, Tails...

Uh. I hate the power deleters. It mainly makes conversation worse for the remaining humans on Reddit.

Yeah, It’s a weak point anyway. While the graphs aren’t detailed research, there’s also no reason to believe dbzer0’s perspective on the same network includes 8 times as many new users as LW for some reason. Or all the users in their communities have 8x worse karma for some external reasons. So we probably need further research.

I think there's two concurrent, but different definitions of the word Fediverse. One means, software that can speak the ActivityPub protocol. And the other one means, social media service which is able to interconnect between different websites. The first one is more useful if you want to use it and know whether it connects you to your friends on Mastodon and the other big ones. The latter is the more technical definition and includes older protocols as well, as well as newer ones and alt...

Well known in the industry how you don't assess programmers by lines of code. You kind of want them to be efficient and clean. Spend their day thinking and design clever solutions... Not pump out lots of unmaintainable low quality stuff. And have a million lines of that by tomorrow. But yeah, guess every aspect of this aligns well. You should be using Linux by now. Or at least do the switch in the near future.

PostmarketOS with some customizations? I think that should be possible.

Like today, just better? It's likely still going to power most of the servers, 70% of smartphones, a lot of the embedded devices... And maybe desktop marketshare is going to rise a bit above the current 4%.

If it's just you, and you're fine with the regular login... Just disable signup and don't add more authentication mechanisms like oauth/openID. I'm using nginx as a reverse proxy as well. For now, I added a lot of "deny" directives to ban all the address ranges from Tencent, Alibaba, OpenAI. It's not a 100% solution, but works well enough for me. I'm mostly worried about AI crawlers causing too much load on my server. And it stopped since, so I don't thin...
