I don’t know how to explain to people that just because certain things appear to approximately work doesn’t mean they actually work. This was already horrifically difficult before AI and now it’s damn near impossible to get the point across when literally any trivial example passes muster The asymmetry between me having to provide a compelling defence that they can actually understand (without the required background knowledge) vs them being able to endlessly generate garbage in seconds is just...

One thing I keep thinking about is how maybe the last ~80 years were the anomaly. That we’re not living in unprecedented times, but rather are finally reverting back into precedented times after decades of weirdness. I don’t think about that to sit and doom. I think about it to ask myself the question about what now. What do I do if this is the beginning of the next 150-300 years of increasing chaos? It’s easy to roll over and wait if you think it’ll be over next week. It’s also easy to roll ov...

Public transit apps should come with an option note. Like “hey so the transfer is a 12 minute wait but if you think you can make it and you don’t walk like a lil bitch you can try to make the one in 4 minutes. Good luck have fun bestie”

Whenever I want to explain what I mean by "availability is political" and "uptime is a Noble Lie," I'm going to start by discussing these two pages: https://mrshu.github.io/github-statuses/ vs https://www.githubstatus.com/ Even the per-component uptimes are different! And the aggregate calculation is… interesting

Unpopular opinion in tech time: The more I see enterprise and corporations in general exploiting OSS and maximizing open resources as much as possible, the more I'm okay with smaller companies charging out the nose for "basic features" like SSO Because, y'know, we've proven as an industry that we're unwilling to pay for, fund, furnish, foster, collaborate, or in any other way even acknowledge the existence of a funding method not based on drawi...

The year is 2033. I press my fingerprint to the scanner to verify that I am a human; it pricks the finger, scans the blood, then chirps happily: "human detected". Relieved, I tell the AI "okay, generate the resume and submit it for me please". InterviewGPT works for a moment. "Done" it purrs I sigh and wonder why did it come to this. I went to a good University, I got a degree. I even verified my LinkedIn and Website with HumanID fingerpr...

I read this article today and quite liked it https://www.drewlyton.com/story/the-future-is-not-self-hosted/ An analogy came to mind when reading it: if the cloud is feudalism, self hosted is sustenance farming. Sustenance farming… Well, it sucks, it’s brutal, it’s awful. No wonder people want centralized infrastructure! Groceries aren’t a concept in sustenance farming, neither is something like “food sensitivities”—you just die or accept the feudalism because you have no other choice. Some p...

Age verification but instead of verifying your age via some weird numeric or biometric bullshit, have people swipe left (“I don’t get it”) or right (“I understand this reference”) on memes until your age is calculated.

Poll: should “reaction emojis” (which are called reactji, apparently??) be considered a valid form of email, and should your email client let you send react-o-mail? Like = fuck no Repost = absolutely fuck not

If I had to identify a list of skills in high impact engineers, it would include: - ecological awe - intellectual humility - respect for the complexity of unfamiliar problems - cross functional communication - resilience engineering - marketing and sales (“Technical skills” aren’t in my top ten)

Ok what is up with azure functions + application insights + opentelemetry ?? I spent over two hours today digging through every bit of docs they had and my conclusion was “shit is broke” I really don’t want that to be correct. I don’t even think it’s correct! But what the fuck

It’s frustrating see a survey ask carefully designed questions that guide you to answer that the system is doing what it’s incentivised to do (vs what you think it should) I’d love to see more “Is this survey useful?”, “how effective are these measures”, and “are we asking the right questions?”

I didn’t get a chance to ask the question during the panel, so I’ll ask it out-loud here :) I tend to have a mental model of behaviour that I think about on social media: interaction level and collective level. If you want to moderate interaction level content, then that’s things like “is this image problematic” or “is this person harassing someone else” and so on. That seems to be what the DSA mostly addresses? Which is great! We need more protection there But the collective level is somethi...

There are two types of people: Chaotic circadian rhythm gremlins who can’t fall asleep or wake up, need 7 alarms, and dread life The blessed chosen, favoured by the gods, who naturally wake up whenever they need to without an alarm clock and are up early by default … and they’re dating each other

One of the things that was interesting to me is that in trans circles, the hormone you were born with is almost universally associated with depression, low energy, lack of emotional expression, and so on. Which is greatly improved when you transition, and usually further improved when you start HRT. Except one of those (testosterone) is the only one that society *also* associates with lack of emotional expression. So imagine how interesting it is to see repeatedly all the trans mascs going “I c...

Currently watching the goodest boy service doggo steal a snack on the train floor as a self reward for his good behaviour Owner? Not impressed. Much scolding But by the tail wags and guilty look on his face I can tell he has ✨ zero ✨ regrets (I am posting this because I have no self restraint and need to remain normal around working dogs on duty but goodness this buddy is so fucking adorable)
