Occasionally I wonder whether the band Sabaton really just started as an attempt to learn history for school, but the group project got out of hand. 🤔

sigh. At $DAYJOB, a user of my code is loading data. Half a million records (~300MB CSV) is taking about 3hr. That works out to ~3k records per minute which is perfectly cromulent for the work being done. Except the network group-policy locks the screen and then logs the user out of the VM after 1hr of inactivity. So they need to babysit the process and jiggle the mouse every so often. Instead of fixing the policy that kills a running process if the user has walked away from the machine, t...

@cks dumb¹-but-appreciative-thanks to you… popping around your blog, it has the bog-standard hyperlink and :visited coloration so it was easy to tell which links in an article I'd already read (or opened in another tab) vs those I hadn't. So thanks! ⸻ ¹ "dumb" because it's the default behavior of browsers, but too many sites override that default in the name of style/visual-aesthetics

Ah, that satisfying feeling of cleaning up a picayune issue that has bugged you for years, and it just took editing a couple lines to smoothe out. Today it was my remind(1) files. It defaults to putting a blank line after each reminder, but it can be suppressed with SET $AddBlankLines 0 so I had several-but-not-all of my scripts selectively opting in to blank-line suppression. But I did want the blanks in the output that cron(8) emailed to me daily because it didn't have all my usua...

Huzzah! I've been slowly moving my #plaintextaccounting workflow from the appears-to-be-sloppifying ledger(1) to hledger(1) which @simonmic seems to lovingly maintain by hand. One of the reports I've run on occasion is a monthly (-M) or weekly (-W) breakdown of average-spending in particular categories¹. But there were some quirky edges in ledger(1) that meant that running the report for a parent category didn't roll up all the child-categories under it (so using the...

looking over the lad's HS physics notes and free-body diagrams, I see the force of gravity (Fg), the force of friction (Ffric), the normal force (Fn), and the applied force (Fap). The junior-high boy in me can't help but snicker with puerile amusement.

I learned today that POSIX specifies a tool designed to assist you in reviewing & modifying LLM-generated code. In typical Unix fashion, they shortened "reviewing & modifying" to just two letters: $ rm code.rs It even has command-line options to [r]ecursively [f]ix whole directories of LLM-generated code: $ rm -rf project/

Oh, learned a lovely little Firefox+uBlock trick today. Apparently, if an HTML element has a shared name="…" value across multiple , they act as an accordion…opening one will close all the others. This drives me bonkers. If I wanted to close a element, I'd click on it and close it. So in your uBlock settings, you can add the following rule *##details[name]:remove-attr(name) and it will remove the "name" attribute from all elements on every site and I never have...

Okay, I'm confused (and clearly don't actually follow soccer/futbol). Today's score was listed as SUI 0(4) vs COL 0 (3). My reading is that neither team scored any goals (0-to-0), but I'm unsure what the 4-to-3 aspect means in relation to SUI advancing over COL. (on the bright side, with COL out of the running, I can stop caring about the #WorldCup 😆)

RE: https://cyberplace.social/@GossiTheDog/116850588672790759 This is interesting (though I dislike that it seems to be burning tokens/resources to determine). It says my "Gumnos" nym has a "strength" of 294 and is in the top 20%. I'm not really sure what that's supposed to mean. Top 20% of what? More amusingly, it seems to have identified me as an active Stack Overflow user (I have maybe a dozen posts and haven't logged in for *years*), that I'm associated...

@phil@fed.bajsicki.com There was recent kerfuffle¹ about LLM-washing of licensed code, training an LLM on it, and then getting "public domain" versions of it on the other end. As @cwebber@social.coop noted a while back², that would either mean you can license-wash proprietary software (train it on the source to Photoshop or Windows and get a public-domain version out), or the underlying code licensing still holds…both are interesting outcomes. ⸻ ¹ the most notable one I've seen h...

Okay, I hit a crazy #OpenBSD (or possibly Perl) peculiarity today. For background context, OpenBSD's pkg_* tools are all written in Perl. Testing stuff in a discussion with @rl_dane@polymaths.social, I had cause to throw ktrace on the pkg_info command like $ ktrace -f pkg_info.ktrace pkg_info -Q remind All said, fairly boring. But when I was browsing through the dump $ kdump -R -f pkg_info.ktrace | less I found that it did a stat(2) call on every single file in my current working dire...

Just saw news that Epic Games has release "lore", a version-control tool for large projects like games (with their associated assets) https://github.com/EpicGames/lore My first concern was licensing which turns out to be BSD-licensed. That's good. My second concern is how open they are to outside contributors. Based on the CONTRIBUTIONG.md file, this feels like "you can view it, you can fork it and do your own thing, but all project contributions get vetted through intern...

Before I go and code it up myself, does anybody know of a battle-tested utility that will take a Maildir directory as input, process all the messages into an output Maildir directory normalizing all messages to just their text/plain components? The notable edge-cases I see: • pure old-school text/plain (without any MIME component), in which case just copy the message over • messages with just a MIME single text/plain would ideally get promoted to a non-MIME embodiment of the text/plain body...

For the #SQL & finance nerdery folks, this was an good writeup¹ of fraud-detection using SQL, providing actual queries with technical explanations. I'll grant, the audience for the post is pretty niche, but if you're an aspiring SQL dev, it has some strong examples using window-functions (including named window-functions² which I don't often see in the wild, since it's only become more available in the last 5 years or so). ⸻ ¹ https://analytics.fixelsmit...
