Me: I will use "radium water" as an analogy for how horrible AI's potential subtle long-term effects are, because the general public in 2026 can easily understand this analogy. Taylor Lorenz is preparing for her "why I left the left" right-wing grifter pivot. Do not trust her. https://www.thefp.com/p/two-drinks-with-taylor-lorenz-savodnik (If you do not know "the free press", it is Bari Weiss's right-wing false-balance propaganda outlet, so talking to them *at all* is already suspicious. Talking to them about how you "wouldn’t say [you're] particularly woke" is a dog whistle so loud my ears are bleeding.)

I logged in to LinkedIn to see a page full of people praising DHH, got mad, and wrote this. Less than 12 hours later I got an email telling me "Your post doesn’t comply with our Professional Community Policies on bullying and harassment. It’s been removed from LinkedIn and only you can access it." Big tech is more and more mask-off every day.

The software industry's original sin was "no warranty, even the implied warranty of merchantability", even on literal products for sale. Every evil we have visited upon the world — clickwrap licenses, instagram anorexia, AI dystopia — is downstream of the generalized ability for software to disclaim liability for defective products in ways that every other industry just absolutely cannot.

New Blog: What Would A Serious AI Product Look Like? Every “AI” tool is missing critical features that you would need if you wanted to do real work with them. What would those look like, if they existed? https://blog.glyph.im/2026/09/serious-ai-product.html

RE: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/117338022446987611 the way I am coping with my own version of this, of creeping corruption all the way up and down the stack, rather than starting at the bottom of the stack with like-minded folks and building all of modern computing up from first principles, is to build whatever little islands of resilience that I can within the ocean of slop. I don't know if this is for any principled reason though, it is probably just that I can't withstand the total...

I realize I'm in a strong minority here but I just _cannot_ perceive submitting LLM-generated work to a volunteer project as anything but an extremely rude and thoughtless thing to do. I _know_ that the consensus social etiquette is that I'm supposed to have a prominently-posted policy statement that this now-generally-accepted-as-normal thing is actually considered bad in this specific place, but it remains jarring for me every single time.

RE: https://wandering.shop/@phildini/117310939687993407 Folks let's get some more boosts on this and connect to a Grafana expert, we can't have this AI harm mitigation strategy absolutely face-plant on the _first try_. (I am Very Bad At Grafana™ so this one's beyond my ability to just jump into the breach on, which is probably a good thing)

RE: https://framapiaf.org/@davidrevoy/117281447934257751 unironically, unashamedly do this. call your friends, ask them for help. and when they say “wait did you ask me just to replace your AI” say yes. say you’ll owe them one but you appreciate them so much more than AI. and show up for them, too. do not opt out of friendships because you’re too embarrassed that you used a chatbot for a while

mastodon really needs to make "whose replies are you in right now" more visible in the UI. I suspect that the lack of a sense of *place* in social media is a big reason why people unintentionally participate in dog-piling and harassment; posting a reply, which should be viewed as being a guest in someone's mentions, is presented almost exactly the same as top-level posting, which should be viewed as standing on your own private stage

I am usually a day-1 upgrader for Apple OSes. My reasoning being that I'm not really in a consensual relationship with this company where I get to have real choices; upgrading sooner means I can get the benefits of the new release faster and adapt to the new indignities sooner. I gotta say though the Apple Intelligence stuff is just … disgusting. I know it can be disabled through screen-time hacks, but it feels invasive. Like an Illithid tendril scooting just a bit further up my nose.

Sigh. I don't like that I'm getting so much practice at this, but I am converging on a strategy for this generation of clanker: ask a question that implies but doesn't actually request a code change, see if they immediately reply by pushing another commit within minutes that just obeys your orders rather than answering your question. https://github.com/twisted/twisted/pull/12837

so much of what is driving personal AI adoption—that is, outside of corporate control—is the breakdown of community. writers can't find other writers to bounce their ideas off of. open source maintainers can't find other maintainers to work with. people picking up hobby projects can't find other hobbyists. even when you *can* find people it's an exhausting challenge to make time for integrating into the community. but the chatbot is always only a click away.

okay I have successfully avoided responding to any of these directly but after having seen like the TENTH post today saying something like "we don't need to convince you to like AI, the revolution is coming whether you like it or not" I just have to reply, generally, to this whole sentiment: OKAY THEN. IF WE ARE GETTING LEFT BEHIND THEN LEAVE US BEHIND, ALREADY

if you are trying to evaluate the efficacy of LLMs and you are reading the personal story of someone building an impressive demo, do not read the post looking for technical details. instead, see if you can spot: - sleep disruptions - grandiose generalized language about upcoming social and technological change - increasing mania as the project progressed - social isolation - jokes about addiction that read as insecure deflection - getting stuck at 90%

So here's a weird thing that keeps happening: 1. botlicker shows up to open source project and pushes some slop 2. overwhelmed / exhausted / fed up maintainer slightly mischaracterizes their usage[1]. 3. botlicker absolutely EXPLODES in an unhinged rage, demanding an apology, often repeatedly in multiple forms even if one is already offered. …

believing that LLMs will soon be able to take on economically valuable tasks fully autonomously because their outputs sound increasingly plausible and surely it's just a matter of extending that intelligence into agency is like believing that pretty soon video games are going to have food in them that smells and tastes good because the graphics look so good now and surely it's just a matter of expanding to the other senses
