Switched from GitHub Actions and GitHub hosted runners to using Buildkite and hosted AWS runners, and it's so good. Our feedback time on pull-requests went from 8+ minutes to less than 2, and the Buildkite UI is excellent. I was inspired by this article: https://www.iankduncan.com/engineering/2026-02-05-github-actions-killing-your-team/

Got this idea from @mikker (https://mastodon.social/@mikker ) about a refactor pass skill. It's such a simple thing and always finds things to simplify or remove. It's like the good habit of reviewing your own pull request, you always find things to remove or refactor. It's nice to have an agent do a first pass before you do ๐ Here's mine: https://gist.github.com/garriguv/8965e11bc65da172403137a6871ecf14

It says a lot about general pace urgency when your coding agent asks to schedule a check for CI and PR comments "in 3 days" ๐ Nope, we're going to review this right now, and it's going to land in production automatically in the next 15 minutes.

Our background agent system (see https://engineering.getdexter.co/2026/02/23/how-we-built-our-own-background-coding-agents/) is paying off every day. We keep tweaking it and adding new features. We added a CLI a couple weeks ago that enables Claude and Codex to manage and dispatch tasks. For example today, Claude Code planned for and now just dispatched 12 tasks to help pave to way to make our app localizable.

Coding agents can run the test suite, but for UI changes that isn't enough. Someone has to look at the page. We gave ours a small Ruby CLI that drives a real browser against the dev server, takes screenshots, and writes them where the agent can read them back, very nice ๐ ๐ป https://engineering.getdexter.co/2026/05/08/ai-visual-checks-for-rails-apps/

I wrote a compiler in Ada at university, it was an epic multiple-week project we had to complete. I never got to work professionally with Ada but I'll always have a soft spot for it, and it's clear why it's a no-brainer to pick for critical infrastructure like medical hardware. If you haven't heard much about it, read this great article: https://www.iqiipi.com/the-quiet-colossus.html
