What we need most at this point are hardware manufacturers that aren't in bed with the CIA. for a long time i have had the feeling that basically there's only a very small number of hardware manufacturers in the world, we all know them, TSMC and others, and basically i suspect that the CIA puts some kind of spyware directly into the hardware. maybe i'm wrong here, but i have a gut feeling. we need independent hardware manufacturers, maybe stationed in europe or somewhere else in the...

> “We’re not far from a world — I think we’ll be there in three to six months — where AI is writing 90% of the code. And then in 12 months we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code.” They haven't mastered the true Zen yet. The bad programmer writes a lot of spaghetti code that is impossible to debug and fix, so it has to be rewritten. The good programmer writes a few lines of efficient code and is done with the work. The enlightened programmer realizes this fea...

People have inferiority complex when they're young so they feel they need to brag with how "badass" they are. When you're older you understand that true wisdom is in the little things, in the things that don't look like much but make up a healthy society.

Can we get some information on what's the ratio of total houses/people in the country, from 1960 to today?

Downvote because your post is mostly tribalism. It's "us users" vs "them evil state who want to surveil us". Have you actually spent time considering whether age verification is beneficial? Whether parents think that their children spend too much time online, or whether the teenagers think that themselves? Have you taken their input and concerns serious? Many people i know irl are saying that children should spent less time online and maybe only in cleaner parts of the...

The US government fundamentally doesn't give a crap about your wellbeing. In fact if you die at 56 instead of 76 the government can cheap out of approximately 16 years of paying you a retirement.

theoretically you should be right but there's software hidden in the hardware that you can't uninstall or modify that *could* (hypothetically) be surveilling you. like in the networking equipment that's inside the phone. realistically, i think the chances for that happening are actually very low, also because the networking firmware could only see your encrypted data packets, but it could still figure out the IP addresses that you communicate with. i'd rate it a none/low risk le...

By the way, granting AI personhood would *not* mean it gets special privileges or extra protection or sth. Companies are legally speaking [persons too](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juridical_person). That doesn't mean that people recognize them as "alive and sentient". It merely means that companies are able to possess property, enter contracts, file lawsuits, and such. Not more, not less.

every planet is (approximately) flat if you only consider a small portion of its surface area. knowing that the planet is a sphere is only relevant if you're doing (a) worldwide business/travel (shipping routes, airplane routes, ...) or (b) spaceflight due to orbital mechanics.

I believe that the "falling rate of profit" is actually a real phenomenon, but it is not *only* caused by workers not being able to afford stuff. It's also partially caused by other companies learning to produce the same products, which drives up competition, reduces monopolies and therefore reduces profits. Like consider medicine. When you develop a new medicine, the first 20 years you have a patent right and therefore nobody else can produce the stuff. So you can set arbitrary...

What we need is people who actually write up policy proposals. It doesn't matter whether you have a senate majority, you need to write the policy proposals now. What actually changes things is societal pressure, and you only build that up by showing that another way is possible, which you show by writing down how exactly you would run an alternative society. For which you have to write down policy proposals.

> It’s not because of efficiency that things last less time now. well, yeah, a lot of over-engineering makes things fickle and it increases the number of potential failure points. simpler technology *is* simply more durable. My grandma has equipment they used for farming when she was a kid (that was 70 years ago). Stuff like buckets, pushcarts, manual hoes (those you use for farming, think minecraft hoes). They still work flawlessly. Also there's literally a proverb that says: "Yo...

> no exposed screws and everything is glued in. Ironically, everything being glued in is also the reason why they last much longer before you have to repair them for the first time. Screws are potential failure points where stuff can get loose. When stuff is glued together with modern glues, it's basically shut like welded. It doesn't get loose and lasts much longer. Especially for stuff like smartphones that's relevant. When stuff is screwed together, it's typically not ai...

I agree. If AI becomes outlawed, it will simply be used without other people knowing about it. This approach, at least, means that people will label AI-generated code as such.
