TIL vim has built-in encryption. If you type :X it prompts you for a passphrase and after saving the file it will be stored in encrypted form. When you reopen the file in vim it detects the encrypted format and prompts you for the passphrase to decrypt, so it's completely transparent. It uses the blowfish cipher, which is pretty old now but still considered secure, so long as it's only used for small files

Hollywood are full steam ahead making their stupid "Hunt for Gollum" movie but all we really want to see is a chill soap opera set in the Shire, just hobbits going about their daily lives with occasional bits of romance and scandal

I think the best thing about the ongoing Count Binface saga is the fact that he's actually genuinely funny - as a character concept, when interacting in interviews and also his manifesto "pledges" etc. It's good to see the British tradition of novelty election candidates being continued

Bluesky logo being a dead butterfly seems oddly appropriate

Boosted this earlier but I'm going to repost for good measure. Kids have been being taught to read wrong for years based on debunked theories that taught them to skip over words, guess at what's written or rely on pictures instead of actually reading the words. Incredible that anyone ever thought this was a good idea, and in parts of the US it's still being taught. https://www.apmreports.org/episode/2019/08/22/whats-wrong-how-schools-teach-reading

It's pretty great how 80s documentation never assumed the user had ever even heard of a computer before
