One more reminder this week that my newsletter is on hiatus due to a newborn. This will probably continue until at least the start of October, & I thank you for bearing with me. Old posts: https://salt-for-the-eclipse.ghost.io

Yesterday I followed rite with First Quarter meditations 🌓 I suppose I should also say I followed it with mothering, but that's going to apply every day of the rest of my life, so

Yesterday I followed rite with pre-holiday cleaning & I did a little more today, but I’m running up against a wall with how I may still be anemic (never mind the preeclampsia). Finding the right balance between sleep, important chores, & newborn care feels utterly fucking impossible even without factoring in my body’s impaired limits. Don’t even get me started about how this shit is affecting breastfeeding. I’m so angry at this society we live in.

A busy couple of days have passed with Haust Blót — no commemorative toot for that on Tuesday, I apologize — & then me playing catchup on tasks that the baby waylaid me from (either through having been born slightly before we had certain things ready, or through just being a baby). Today, despite a doctor's appointment that took too much time, now feels like the first day when I can start focusing more on certain things that will foster a better relationship between the baby &...

New newsletter post! :boost_please: :reply_love: "Solar Autumn + Full Moon: Fertility reexamined" It's Friday, and on this particular Friday I have been married for fifteen years, and tomorrow comes the holiday that my owner and I mark as Calan Awst, but which many of you may call Lughnasadh or Lammas. As the observance of the grain harvest and a celebration of other first fruits, it is a day in which fertility rites naturally come to the fore, but less as a matter of hope and sa...

Today I’ve been following rite with writing & getting a head start on my newsletter because of how tomorrow I’ll be out nearly all day but I didn’t want to just skip.

I feel as if yesterday I could barely follow any rite, but today there was something big: first birth class with the doula! I now feel more reassured about some things I didn’t understand before.

New newsletter post! :boost_please: :reply_love: "First Quarter: Weaving the Nine Herbs' Charm" Hello. It's Friday, and lately we have begun to harvest tomatoes, and we found our first new potato, and the nearby farms have blueberries, raspberries, peaches. The autumn carrots are planted. The air is rich with dragonflies. We have not yet had enough rain to break our critical drought, but rain at least keeps passing through here and there. The heat of the day is strong but com...

I don't think this is exactly some moment of deciding that I actually "am" Jewish, because there still feel like too many reasons I can't make that full leap of identification, but in reckoning with ancestor work during this extremely liminal existence, I find myself really overwhelmed by — of all things — the Fiddler on the Roof movie soundtrack coming up in my music collection, consuming me with visceral feelings about being partially descended from people who did not live on...

Today has felt chaotic (something between classic Mercury retrograde bullshit & friends coming out of the woodwork to confide about crises) but I'm hoping that I can still fit in some writing, homemaking, & First Quarter meditations 🌓

Yesterday I followed rite with writing, homemaking, & preparedness work of a kind, as well as hosting an important visit with important family. 🖤 Today: so far there hasn't been much besides handling pregnancy minutiæ, but it's a beautiful, balmy, smoke-free day so after lunch I am probably going to help plant carrots & dig for our first new potatoes. Also — homemaking later.

New newsletter post! :boost_please: :reply_love: "New Moon: A brief ontology of sadism & masochism" It's Friday. This landscape is seemingly being freed from the latest wave of wildfire smoke from hundreds of miles away — so far the first such event this summer, but based on other recent summers probably not the last. But temperatures might also already be veering toward more tolerable peaks, as the cicadas whine, the corn ripens, and the roadsides are lined with blazing-star...

Hellishly sickly yellow sky & air today. The smoke is definitely worse. AQI in the 120s-150s. I am not going anywhere but sitting indoors & looking at everything also feels horrible.

Hard day yesterday. Didn’t get much rite done beyond homemaking. Today I’m deeply hoping for writing but I’ve also been to my 30 week exam (got my Tdap booster as well), am checking in with my doula in a few hours, & supposedly I have my support group tonight though I’m unsure if it’s really happening. I also need to do something nice for the New Moon. 🌑 Meanwhile we’re under another heat advisory till tomorrow night, & I’m shocked there isn’t an air quality alert because of how much s...

Today's newsletter post will be for paid subscribers only. My goal is to have it out in an hour or two at most because of how I'm about to be traveling (& largely offline) for several days.

Today I’ve followed rite mostly with a key “start of third trimester” exam, which involved way, way too much moving between air conditioned spaces through hot ones (to be clear: any amount of time in hot spaces right now is too much). But I’m about to eat a cold dinner & do some writing.

Today I've followed rite with writing. Also, more outdoor work — but it got cut short by a sudden downpour, which is probably for the best anyway because the air got muggy as hell so I was starting to struggle. I think the plants appreciated the rain, too! It's good timing before the heat dome.

Rite this weekend was quite a few things. Writing, decolonial workshop prep, homemaking, community preparedness work, a bit of knitting (finally starting my first pair of socks & learning a herringbone stitch variant for it!), & some very affirming, valuable Full Moon tarot 🌕

Garden work didn't happen yesterday & probably still won't happen today. I'm just too exhausted & the pollen consequences are still daunting. I'm really, really hoping something can come together tomorrow. But I've at least followed rite with writing & my volunteer gig.

The night before last, at our latitude we achieved what I refer to as the first bending of the solstice "hinge." This is marked by the daily increase in sunlight progressing by less than one minute per day around sunrise, soon to be followed by the same deceleration happening with sunset. Solstice "slow time" is now underway. An alignment I have consistently noticed over the past few years is that our poppies open their first flower no more than a day or two...

Today so far I've followed rite with land connection workshop prep & a small amount of writing. & now the weather doesn't seem terribly pleasant but I'm hoping that I will actually, seriously wind up going outdoors soon for pulling up some unruly plants.

Sigh, some garlic mustard has shown up next to our house. This is annoying because it's near a patch of preexisting Himalayan blackberry that we've already struggled to eradicate for years. Luckily the garlic mustard should at least be easy to remove since it's so early & the flowers probably haven't gone to seed yet. Not feeling brave enough to try cooking out the cyanide & eating the greens, so similar to our one pokeweed experience, I think this is going in the rubbis...

Today I've followed rite with Last Quarter meditations 🌗 & helping to paint the room that's turning into the nursery. The room's color had been a lovely blue, but since so many people are insane about color-based gender assumptions, the baby is going to have a green forest wonderland room for the time being. We'd prefer nobody jump to conclusions about them being a boy unless they tell us as much (I'm expecting that to be around age 3 or 4). In the meantime they'll ge...
