When people ask why I would be for something akin to "Medicare for all" when I've never not had insurance, it comes down to WHY I've never not had insurance. Having expensive medical conditions since childhood, inclusion of adequate insurance was a key factor in EVERY job offer I took. It HAD to be. I couldn't take a job simply because it was interesting or non-minetarily rewarding. I HAD to o have medical coverage. Then, once I married, it became even more critical.

It's like, "hey, Arlington county: how about you go back to individually-marked spaces? You start aggressively ticketing people that can't fit their cars into what used to be one slot and people will relearn how to do so." ...Plus, maybe you can do away with your "experiment" in "surge pricing" for street parking. In the DC area, there's a lot of drivers that operate on the assumption of "if there's a gap such that oncoming cars will see me and slow down if I pull in, it's safe to do so" These are people that will be involved in multiple car accidents across their driving lifetimes. I try to operate on the assumption I won't be seen and reacted to in time. The funny thing is, these same people will do a 70mph+ freeway merge — or lane-change — into a gap they wouldn't feel co...

#Google makes literally zero effort to ensure that each of their services' web Consoles functions usefully-similarly — let alone "identically"— to each other. You usually only see this level of fracturedness in an "enterprise" product when a company has bought a whole bunch of companies and then quickly cobbled together some kind of management overlay. Jesus. You know that your service's web UI sucks when not just #AWS beats you, but so too does #Azure. Whaaaat the...

I think regularly making use of my #EV's "range" mode confuses its computer's range-calculations. On the one hand, it has generally changed from predicting 180mi-ish range for 100%-0% to prediction a 220-240mi range. On the other hand, when you're out driving, the predicted range erodes much more quickly than what you're actually driving. I mean, we did get significantly better range on our Independence Day weeklong road-trip than we'd gotten on prior road trips (n...

Project Manager: "Use #Gemini: it's got one of the largest-available context windows" Me: "Okaaay… But it also seems to be one of the more hallucination-prone #LLM options you could choose from. Are you sure you want to walk this path?" #AI

So, one of the nicer things about the stateful, conversational nature of chat-style #AI interactions is that you can be a lot looser with with your statements and requests. The context engines are good enough to pick out intention and discard nonsense, slang and colloquialisms. For the unfamiliar, "commence to jigglin'," comes from an Aqua Teen Hunger Force character.

Alright. Spent part of day migrating my #minikube from #DockerDesktop bridged to #WSL2 to #Podman hosted in WSL. That will save me a few hundred MiB of system memory and some compute-cycles. Only required some very minor tweaks to my #kustomize enabled #NemoClaw configuration (LAYERS!!). Unfortunately, moving away from Docker Desktop meant I also had to update my system's hosts file. Oh well. Productive day.

@eff@mastodon.social At least with a standalone smart camera, you can mount them in ways that constrains their view to just your property. Unfortunately, with the ways most porches are laid out, that's all but impossible with a doorbell camera.

@verge@mastodon.social About the only reason to "buy" HP products, at this point, is if you absolutely freaking hate yourself (or you absolutely need a device for which there's no other, reasonably-priced equivalent). I mean, it's like they're trying to capture the FinDom market segment.

I don't drive much (work from home) and when we do go out, usually not parking in paid lots or street parking. Much like EV charging-networks, the monthly "membership" fee would be higher than any savings to be had.

@infobeautiful@vis.social Now do the US (where even not-particularly-large cities have more voters than some entire states).

@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net I sometimes wonder whether, as a US-based person, it might not still make sense to move my vanity-domains to a non-US alternative to Linode (for my needs, a hyperscaler's pricing structure just never makes sense). The idea first popped up when Linode got bought by Akmai, but was really only ever notional. With the fuckery around Trump 2.0, it was a smidge more than just notional ...but still a very low-priority brain-bug.

Other day, after gym, wife asked if we could stop by the Whole Foods nearest our house. The route there takes us part a Wegmans. As we're cresting the hill that ends in the intersection that, if you go straight you get to the Wegmans and if you turn right you go to the Whole Foods, I had a quick doubt: "did you say Wegmans or Whole Foods?" Wife was incredulous: "they don't even sound similar." I replied, "they both begin with 'W' and my brain works vis...

The whole "Americans have a love affair with their cars" thing may have once been true, but it hasn't been since "monochrome" became the dominant car pigmentation, automatics became all but the only option for transmissions and SUVs and ginormous pickups supplanted sedans and, especially, sport coupes. https://bsky.app/profile/americanfietser.bsky.social/post/3mlygjnvhtc2e

you would think that people who always back in to parking spaces would be better at it than they generally seem to be. Personally, I prefer head in parking. However, the charging port placement usually requires us to back in at public charges. Even as infrequently as I back in, I feel like I'm a lot better at it than people that always back in.

I'm one of those weirdos who, before actually putting my legal signature on something that's potentially binding, prefers to thoroughly read and understand what I'm signing. I work for a small company. My company works in a market-segment that both has thin margins and high compliance-requirements. Because of those thin margins, they tend to skimp on "back office" personnel's compensation. That skimping tends to mean that they tend to get people with skills in the low...

We have a baker's dozen of peonies in various shades of white, pink and red. They're soon going to have spent themselves for the season. This "album" shows what's probably going to be the last bouquet we get from this year's blooms. We also have a climbing-rose in our back yard. Last year, before I did the "winterizing" cut-back, it had grown midway up our second-floor windows. It came back aggressively, this spring. It set about 40 buds. It buds 2-4 times/se...
