    USB-C is great about 80% of the time and yet somehow I have ended up with some seriously cursed things happening. Three years ago our IT department supplied me with a Dell laptop and a Philips USB-C monitor. Initially I couldn’t get the monitor to accept video from the laptop. Quite a lot of work from IT later we discovered that disabling Thunderbolt in the laptop BIOS solved the problem.

    I really enjoy singing in a choir, but my heart always sinks when the conductor decides we’re going to do clapping patterns. “Everybody claps eight beats, then the women continue clapping as before and the men switch to clapping off-beats”. Can I do it? Can I heck. At least they don’t ask for choreography.

    A few thoughts on how new technology has always been overhyped, by reference to some now-established technologies. Let&amp;#39;s start with the helicopter. These were first mass produced in WWII. By the 1950s they were more powerful and versatile thanks to the use of turbine engines. People genuinely thought that they could be used for city-centre to city-centre travel.

    I’ve seen a few people posting stuff saying that renewable energy systems (solar, battery, wind) aren’t sustainable because they still need mining and processing to make them in the first place. This is disingenuous and seems like green purity-spiral stuff (and I have unfollowed one person posting it).

    I know this is pretty small beer in the light of world events, but I was not expecting to have to write “risk of invasion by the USA” into the risk assessment for my fieldwork in Greenland in June.
