There's a detailed 1913 map of the Togo Plateau, a forest reserve in Ghana bordered by six communities. Cartographically interesting is that that Akpafu-Todzi, the oldest present-day village of the Mawu, breaks out of the frame of the map The reason is that surveyors Grüner & Sprigade correctly understood that this was historically the most important Mawu village (with Odomi and Mempeasem both established later) I've written about the map on my blog: https://ideophone.o...

Pretty chuffed to hear from the organisers that my "How not to use AI" preconference workshop helped set the tone of the following days, and that scholarly values and the benefits of slowing down were recurring conversation topics If your conference or grad school is looking for a workshop format that avoids the tired marketing cliches and productivity narratives around "AI", I'd be happy to do a rerun (time permitting) https://ideophone.org/how-not-to-use-ai-workshop/...

@tante chef's kiss: "This also shines through in Cory arguing that we need to “liberate” technology. What a strange idea: Technology doesn’t need liberation, people do." Thank you for writing this cogent piece.

@resonanzfilter such a key question. Indeed, what's in it for them? David Widder, Sarah West and Meredith Whittaker have written very cogently about this when it comes to open-washing: https://davidwidder.me/open.pdf #dhd2025

This is stunning. Vasily Grossman in Life and Fate 1960, writing on "this machine whose dimensions and weight will continually increase as it attempts to reproduce the peculiarities of mind and soul of an average, inconspicuous human being." And pointedly noting in the same breath: "Fascism annihilated tens of millions of people." (I looked this up because of a post by @maelle) #AI #GenAI #fascism

#Ekoplaza #FirstWorldProblems
