this guy's taking the absolute piss here - $1500 for a r720 with ddr3 RAM?? should be $500 max and even that's extremely generous

@zbender@hachyderm.io no I sold the big 90 bay boys :( they were pretty cumbersome, I don’t think they’d fit in any racks at a colo facility

Hmmm, I have been quietly thinking about resurrecting my BYOHDD plans from earlier in the year - today I get an email from one of the server refurb joints I was talking to asking me if there's any hardware I need. Is this a sign??

A dodgy bastard working at the NGV had a racket going where they'd order smartphones at the gallery's expense, then sell them privately and pocket the cash - they did it for years and made $8m!! What the absolute fuck? 1. How did the NGV not notice $8m pissing out (wow our staff really need a lot of smartphones, whatever, this is normal). 2. This person has no shame. How did they think nobody would notice? What did they even do with the $8m? Why didn't they stop at like, $4m or eve...

Plugged the Surface Go 4 into my 34" 3440x1440 monitor and it works nicely at 144Hz, I'm surprised the little N200 CPU can do that!

if i wanted to make a mastodon bot account that posted whenever someone made a new thread on the sizzle forum - is that something cool for aus.social or should I put it somewhere else? (or even run my own mastodon server or something similar)

narrowed it down the $500 PC search to either: HP Pro Mini 400 G9: i3-12300T, 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD - $530 or PC cobbled together from used & new bits: Ryzen 5700G, B550M mobo, 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD, shitty mid-tower case & PSU from Scorptec - $520 If I want DisplayPort 1.4 and DDR4 RAM (DDR5 RAM is just out of the question for 32GB) it really narrows down to Zen2/3 APUs or Intel 11th/12th-gen CPUs

Also selling my ASUS ROG Ally Gaming Console (2023) RC71L-NH001W. Works great, I just don't use it enough to justify keeping it when I have an Xbox and a gaming PC already. There's only so many hours in a day to play video games (unfortunately). I currently have SteamOS on it, but the stock OS is Windows 11 with an ASUS layer designed for handheld gaming. Can put Windows back on if you like. Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 16GB RAM, 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Full info on ASUS's website: https://rog.as...

Anyone interested in buying my MacBook Pro with a broken screen with a well worn patina? I got it cheap off Facebook when I needed a low priced Mac and it did the job as a desktop Mac, but I need something now I can move around! Specs: 14" MacBook Pro A2992 M3 Pro SoC 18GB RAM 512GB SSD Yours for $700 posted (or I can bring it to you in MEL/VIC) - cheaper than a Mac Mini with only 16GB of RAM

$87k for a 2 bedroom pre-fab house - get some cheap land, connect it up to some services, could get everything sorted for under $275k somewhere like Ballarat and it'll probably be better built than a "normal" house https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/975532

$1699 is a very decent price in the current environment for a laptop with 32GB of RAM (fast LPDDR5x-8000 RAM too) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/975554

imho if you’re a lawyer writing documents with CONFIDENTIAL in the footer of every page, working on the train, investing in a privacy film for your laptop screen is a very good idea

it appears that the CEO of NextDC wrote a letter to an MP to have a whinge about planning approval for a data centre - but used AI to write it and it was sent to the wrong MP and made up things that the MP said haven't happened, lol

for a brief window a few years ago, I was given EVs to review by various car makers back when EVs were weird and new, so they figured giving them to tech nerds was a good approach (now they want to give them to tiktok influencers) - I liked it, I would do it again, I wonder if a car review blog in 2026 is still a viable thing

putting a cap on my car research by writing a blog post about all the things that piss me off about new cars in 2026 - probably going to put up with my EX30 for a while longer, maybe some better cars will go on sale next year https://blog.decryption.net.au/posts/cars_suck.html

another bit of bullshit - 4WD, dual motors, 20" wheels etc on the more expensive EVs that have the other features I want make a big difference to driving range, like 50km-100km less

back on my EV buying bullshit (I did not want to buy another car for at least a few more years) and finding that my hard requirement for drivers seat & mirror position linked to a profile, so my 150cm wife and I (185cm) who share the car aren't constantly adjusting the position of the seat and mirrors every few days - isn't that common in many vehicles!

have a look what happens when someone that hates wind turbines near their property (these turbines have been active for years now) gets access to an LLM and makes a confusing and hollow, but serious looking website about their "experience" living near it https://lallalwindfarmrecord.com.au/

it's a shame QLD is giving up on electric busses - once you've been in an EV bus, riding a diesel bus is uncomfortable and stinky https://thedriven.io/2026/09/01/fanciful-pipe-dream-queensland-dumps-electric-bus-mandate-describing-them-as-big-expensive-paperweights/
