A thought I had while out shopping on the AI cult/"true believers": They don't necessarily believe in their own narrative that chatbots are intelligent or progressing towards intelligence. What they fundamentally believe in is The Singularity. What they think they need is to rob humanity's resources long enough for their chatbots to *get lucky* and vomit out something that's capable of the "recursive self-improvement" they believe is possible. Saying they beli...

Was just reminded of how much I *viscerally* hate the "cattle not pets" ideology. I want to say more on this but I don't even know where to begin.

Mastodon has way too many "shitty genx and boomer dudes who took part in the rise of evil tech and are committed to a narrative that they weren't the bad guys". Thankfully they're mostly outside of my circles, but ffs. 🤮

With the locale overhaul project drawing to a conclusion in the next couple weeks, I'll be back to not having any funded projects on #musl. I would really like to get some funding for C23 support (this is a mix of merging/revising existing patches and writing some new code) and POSIX 2024 support (some new code, lots of review of new specification text and bringing existing code for newly-standardized stuff up into conformance) as the next big project(s). Any good leads on making this happ...

Telemetry. The new(ish) popular term for phone-home spyware. There are lots of reasons it's unethical and unsound research, which I've talked about before, but I realized there's something I want to say about the term itself and how it's harmful.

Best thing about Codeberg's new anti-slop policy: When someone shares a link to a project on Codeberg, I don't have to dig thru the project information trying to figure out of it's slop before boosting or considering using it. It makes the Codeberg name a sign of some minimal level of trustworthiness.

The linux-man project has been quietly taken over as a hostile fork of what it was/was supposed to be. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-man/am0RdPxvbIYUKAL-@devuan/T/#m277b916c39713d644d36a42d82debbff1df6bfc5

Clownflare really needs to be forced to take legal responsibility for the stuff they're hosting - and yes, when they're serving it for a customer, they are hosting it not acting as a common carrier. Their business model would collapse immediately if they had to react & respond to legal complaints and customers couldn't just hide behind them while one party claims they're not involved and the other party is hiding their identity.

Interesting. I'm not sure yet what the usefulness of this is, but you can make "DMs to yourself" on Mastodon by setting post privacy to "private mention" (DM) but not @'ing anybody.

Seeing the Base Browser Project https://codeberg.org/basebrowserproject/organization/ patches to remove even the smallest shit is mind blowing. The clowns at Mozilla somehow managed to make functionality that should be a few tens or at worst hundreds of kB of js code into >18 MB of source code (size of the patch to remove it). This is a project where literally everything is 2+ orders of magnitude larger than it should be, for no reason other than management incompetence.

The concept of "blameless postmortems" kinda loses its appeal when the root cause is "somebody used AI codeslop" and there's a clear party to blame for that decision.

Propaganda: "Our AI is so advanced it can escape sandbox containment!" Reality: "Our AI spits out such shit sandboxing patterns that they don't actually do anything, and since our employees just blindly use what it gives them, there was no meaningful 'sandbox escape' needed."

    TIL in Firefox about:config: widget.gtk.overlay-scrollbars.enabled = false widget.non-native-theme.gtk.scrollbar.thumb-size = 1 widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style = 4 widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override = 16 Gets you scrollbars that are actually visible and clickable with the mouse.

If folks want a non-sloppified Linux (kernel), here is how you do it: 1. Make a userspace host shim implementing the internal Linux driver APIs and able to host present and future drivers as userspace processes. 2. Fork a known-good LTS version pre-slop. 3. In the fork, implement a layer to use the above userspace driver framework in place of in-kernel drivers.

Is there a Firefox extension that fixes paste to always enter the pasted text as if it came from an input method? https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/humantype/ does roughly what I want and works, but intentionally does it one character at a time to simulate human typing and trick things looking for human typing. I'm just trying to get around sites where paste is broken if dom.event.clipboardevents.enabled is false because they hooked paste and try to snoop the clipboard themselves ra...

@neal@social.gompa.me @datenwolf@chaos.social @miah@hachyderm.io I'm aware that's their position and I disagree with it deeply. It is only faster if you have unlimited bandwidth between the client and server (i.e. if the display is local or you have an extremely fast wired network). It may mesh better with the bad way apps for popular desktop environments are presently designed to be horribly wasteful consuming all available resources for eye candy. It actively discourages writing app...

Asking for someone else (for whom "just get libreoffice" isn't an answer): what's the real story on getting non-subscription MS Office now? Looks like Pro Plus 2019 is probably the "best" version..? Are any of the license key sellers legitimate? (in terms of getting a perpetual key that you enter at install time and that won't expire or require cracks to install; I don't think they GAF if Microsoft gets paid)

Is there any cryptographic signing protocol whereby the signature can't be attested true without revealing a recipient private key for which the signer only had the public key?

It's come to my attention that musl libc is listed as a "grant recipient" on https://futo.org/ This is an unauthorized use of the project name and logo for promotion of a sketchy organization. I suspect a lot of the other projects listed there are in the same boat.
