Hi! Professionally I'm a developer (unfortunately) and a fledgling writer (hooray). Personally I work on Tabletop RPG stuff.
I love tinkering with new tech, futzing with project management stuff, playing video games (FFXIV, for one), cats, and learning (human/cat) languages. I run authomnibus.com [he/him]

I saw a couple of takes Re: codeberg that weren't quite "oh I don't like LLM code but codeberg shouldn't decide that they're unacceptable, they're neutral hosting!" No, they absolutely can and should do that. Github can drop you for whatever reason at any time, folks. It isn't a publicly-owned service. If you want different moderation go to Gitlab or back to Github or run your own Forgejo! You have options.

I didn't realize it until just now but there's a particular *aesthetic* to vibe coded websites that I keep running across and that's.... weird. Kinda very similar to how every blog started converging on the same design to game Google search rankings.

@elebertus@mastodon.social I mean, I'm an auth weirdo so I have multiple CIAM stacks running at all times, but I generally use Logto for handling auth for my ttrpg group resources and some things attached to Keycloak for anything that supports OIDC/OAuth. For stuff that doesn't, just manage the auth locally.

Hottake Google's latest push with Recaptcha to require you to scan a QR code with a smartphone is just another push towards "you need a modern smart phone that is run by the duopoly to participate in society". Passkeys evoke a similar concern / anxiety, but they're not the same - there are several escape hatches.... but if you own no computing devices at all and rely on borrowing one from the library, for example, you're going to have a hard(er) time.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@Retreival9096/116501652868642399 Look, I don't recommend Proton products because of the shit they pulled when they rolled out a Crypto Wallet and LLM one after another: https://alextheward.com/posts/proton-wtf/ And the stuff with their CEO being a fan of Trump / Republicans But if for some reason they've still got your business you might want to tell them to not slop engineer themselves into a major privacy violation.

So @glyph@mastodon.social asked me what it's like using Asahi on a M2 air daily, so I did a little writup: https://alextheward.com/blog/asahi_on_macbook_air_m2/ The tl;dr is "fine".

@xgranade My dude is torching his own credibility to use an LLM to check for typos. TYPOS.

Did the model really "finally get useful for work" in the last 6 months or did you cook your brain unto thinking it is? You may never know (Also the "advancement" is all in the slopcode wrapper around the LLM not the actual model so...)

I just learned that Milla Jovovich and her buddy Ben just slop coded some AI memory system? This timeline is truly cursed.

Naming your slop bot after the Norse god of wisdom seems like a pretty quick way to earn your place in Hel.

Neat to see an identity provider that includes a big "hey while you shouldn't use the implicit flow with SPAs you can totally still use it with traditional web sites". And....that is true, but like, the authorization code flow is just...better... in basically every way. I think they mean this in a "if you have an old app that's still using it, that's okay" but it doesn't read that way and it feels weird.

I saw something on here that's been bothering me - and it's that an underserved group is getting medical advice from LLMs because doctors just give up when they can't figure it out. So first, I'm sorry medicine is failing you. Second, LLMs are purpose-built to tell you what you want to hear and make up shit. Doctors at least swore an oath to not do harm (and are subject to malpractice laws). OpenAI is not. Please do not take ChatGPT's medical advice. The...

Picking back up a short story I'd started but didn't finish involving Radium + Vampires and thinking about how we *knew* radium was dangerous pretty quickly but those involved in the sale of the stuff were pretty keen on keeping the money flowing as long as possible. Now apply that to Generative AI and how OpenAI's arguing that it's not their fault their product drives people to self-harm because it's against the ToS.
