Where do I copyright Flappy Bird, but with UIHingeInteraction? (For those of you who aren’t working on iPhone Duo updates - UIHingeInteraction tells you how open the internal screen is, as an angle. This could be used to flap the wings and check Apple’s limited warranty for hardware defects.)

For kicks, I just submitted a build done with Xcode 27.1 to TestFlight. Went through without any problems - and that’s good news as journalists start to get Duo review units and want to test apps other than the ones preinstalled by Apple. If you’re one of those journalists and want to see the Iconfactory apps, let me know.

Centering elements on the Duo is tricky. Looking at the image on the left, I was convinced that things weren’t aligned vertically. But after I added xScope’s guides (on the right), everything is correct. The control margin on the right tricks the eye and I don’t know if I can, or should, do anything about that. You’ll probably want this in your Duo toolbox: https://xscopeapp.com

A cold chill ran down my back when I thought about my banking and financial apps running on iPhone Duo.

1. Work for months on a major update of iOS & macOS app 2. Test, test, test 3. Submit to App Review a week before launch 4. Schedule a price increase 5. Get an in-app event approved 6. Have iOS app approved on the same day 7. Have macOS app go into review on the same day 8. Wait a day for macOS 9. Wait another day 10. Wait another day 11. Wait another day 12. Panic 13. Investigate how to unschedule price increase and abort in-app event Mac App Review is actively harmful to the app ecosystem...

A friendly reminder that if you use Mastodon to contact developers about feature requests or bugs and then auto delete your toots, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. Developers use links to those toots in bug trackers.

Now that Apple is getting a handle on making Liquid Glass usable in its default state in iOS 27, I think they need to start addressing the customization of it all. The Fidelity app has always had a green button in the middle of their bottom navbar: something that they can’t really change without confusing a large customer base. Venmo and many others have similar issues. So this is how they adopted Liquid Glass. Yes it’s gross, but that’s what you get with an inflexible design system.

The thing I love most about the Tomtoc screenshot at Daring Fireball is the accessibility icon in the lower-left corner. They clearly XPLORE options to make their site more readable. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2026/07/24/dickover-of-the-week-tomtoc

Something that wasn't obvious to me and which has a huge impact on your developer experience in Xcode 27: The Device Hub sometimes doesn't kill CoreSimulator processes when you quit the app (not sure if this is a bug or intentional). Given that each device uses several hundred processes, the memory/processing impact is significant. You'll probably want to keep an eye on how many you have running: use right-click on the simulator in the list to "Shut Down&qu...

Anyone have any idea why the CompilationCache in DerivedData reports a size of nearly 40 GB but only uses 45 KB on disk? Talk about a red herring while trying to clean up after Xcode 27!

It occurred to me the other day that tvOS is the only remaining Apple platform where you don't have to worry about size or aspect ratio changes in your user interface. Until Apple figures out how to make the TV industry change 😂

I'm not going to say anything nasty about non-native apps, because I use many of them throughout the day. I will, however, say nasty things about using private API, causing a huge clusterfuck within your ecosystem, and then me getting blamed for it. https://furbo.org/2025/10/06/tahoe-electron-detector/ /cc @mjtsai

We got rejected for a TestFlight build with Liquid Glass. Test Details: “Re-built with OS 26 and Liquid Glass.” Rejection: “2.1.0 Performance: App Completeness - Does the app have any new features? If so, what is it and where is it located?” Someday I will look back on all this bullshit and laugh. Today is not that day. /cc @rejected

Reason #52,764 why developers hate App Review. You work your ass off all summer getting things ready to submit on the day that Apple starts accepting submissions for its new OS versions. And you get 13 binaries uploaded on that day. And 12 of them are approved within an hour or two. And one of them has been "In Review" for over 48 hours. I have no fucking idea what's going on, but at this point we can't launch an updated version of Tot on all platforms on M...

I had a great time talking to @jonathanreed about my favorite tech over the years. It all started with a Teletype ASR 33 and a 300 bit/second modem, shown below with my fellow geeks at Tustin High School. It's a fun listen if you're interested in what I've been doing for the past 50 years! https://www.macstories.net/podcasts/first-last-everything/

If you have a new MacBook Pro with an M5, I'd appreciate if you can run a few simple commands from the Terminal: https://gist.github.com/chockenberry/1d08129bdf41bfb70e98c3a75ce74578 This will help me ensure that iPulse works correctly to identify and label the super & performance cores. Thank you, and congrats on the new hardware!

Wallaroo is by far the easiest way to switch wallpaper on your Apple devices, and with all the great images coming out from NASA, we thought it would be nice to make a collection of our favorites. Some of mine are below. The app download and images are FREE. Learn more here: https://wallaroo.app

Whoever did the ◀ ◀ REW graphic for Apple's homepage today has never used a one-bit display with Chicago. Besides the arrows being impossible to render, the glyphs in the text didn't have the standard 6:9 ratio. Also lots of anti-aliasing which is kind of hard to do when your only choices are black or white 😉 I pretended to be Susan Kare and fixed it, bottom is the original, top is my interpretation.

@samhenrigold I loved your latest essay. I was that kid (albeit in 1976, not 2006). Since then, the hardest thing to do is keeping that spirit alive and pushing to find new things. I think we both have that trait, too.
