i stopped tooting, boosting and interacting in the fediverse due to burnout the worst, lowest part of the burnout has passed (and i hope for no relapse) but i still manage to wreck myself whenever i work too long, with no breaks, no movement i feel a deep sense of fragility in one part of me, the one that runs out of energy and ravages the body with headaches. another part, co-existing, is impatient and wants to go right back to doing stuff

the fact that the announcement of ads coming to Stack Overflow comments has a score of negative three hundred something feels fitting but not nearly grim enough the decision is a horrendous breach trust not a breach of some Terms & Conditions, but of trust. remember, websites are meaningless without the trust that a website is relevant to you, without the desire to experience it. Stack Overflow is really burning the fields where that desire used to grow. https://meta.stackexchange.co...

@zormit introduced me to this excellent article, which questions the "productivity gains" that genAI software is said to bring to programming: https://joshcollinsworth.com/blog/productivity the person who wrote this has used genAI to code. the article begins with what genAI helped him "achieve". he goes on to question whether his achievements were really needed, whether they taught him anything. he posits that genAI deprive us of learning, understanding, and...

a former MEP was infected with Pegasus (NSO Group), during the time in which he was part of the #PEGA committee of the EU, which investigated the use of spyware against journalists, activists and politicians (report by Citizen Lab: https://citizenlab.ca/research/member-of-committee-investigating-spyware-hacked-with-pegasus/ ) this man is also a journalist. will the European Media Freedom Act (#EMFA) be cited, too late? the report already cites #GDPR violations on ground of exposing sensitive m...

played a game of "The Time We Have", a DM-less TTRPG about two brothers surviving a zombie apocalypse. the mechanic that makes it a potentially emotionally-intense game is that you play in separate rooms, with a close door between you, backs against the door. you slip cards under the door. there are imposed moments of silence. one brother is infected, one is not. https://moreblueberries.shop/products/the-time-we-have i had a good play session, though i wish there had been mo...

ok, i just fucked-up in a very shameful way i sent @simonwoerpel an article and got back the question: "Since when do we already have #Django v7 and #Pydantic v3?" ...which, upon closer inspection, we don't. the article describes these two software versions, complete with "new features", how to install them and how to use them (lots of code samples!) except these things don't exist but the article looks so believable! but it's all...

dear #python folx does anyone have experience writing #django apps using async views and async ORM operations? doesn't have to be production stuff, can be a personal project. any take-aways, lessons learned you'd like to share? is using #async in #django 6 feasible now? or are we still better off maybe using #fastAPI? if someone knows of a good discussion on this written by humans, ideally from lived experience (not platitudes or docs), i'd also love a link!

finally bought myself a (brother) sewing machine after having used the machines of people i live with it's really difficult for me, as a shorter, fat person, with wide hips, to find pants that fit me properly. i'm giving up on trying to find a brand and style that fits. if anyone knows #sewing #patterns for full-length, high-waist pants (either with an elastic band or zipper + buttons), i would love recommendations or youtube videos that explain how to draft such a pattern, th...

nothing like working on email parsing, facing the demons of real-world data, resigning one's self that standards are like flimsy manifestos nailed to the door of a church and the hydra of email servers will do as it pleases ...and, at the end of the day, delivering one tiny improvement to #OpenAleph now it's time to take a long walk and dissolve all i know about header encoding in the smell of spring

More Perfect Union put out a great video essay on Polymarket and the utter atrocities that they are enacting basically, this industry is just gambling, force-fed to the most economically and emotionally vulnerable, protected by bribes and buying off kleptocratic politicians https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A654vzQTGbQ "some markets just shouldn't exist" - and there are multiple ways to act in line with this thought. one of them is legislation. but it isn't the...

#Bulgaria voted in the 8th election in 5 years summary by Casa Jurnalistului (Romania): The Mafia in Bulgaria has decisively lost the Parliament Borisov's party, which dominated in recent decades: 13%. The "Socialist" party, which ruled during the transition, didn't make it into parliament. The Turkish minority party, hostilely taken over by a Bulgarian mafioso: 6%. Out of three fascist parties that used to get about a quarter of the votes, only one has ju...

looking for recommendations for essay-length contextualizations of the #dada movement in the political context that gave birth to it i have a lot of book-length materials (as in: books!) on my list already i'm hoping fedi can feed me some aperitif: essays that give a sense of that dada achieved, what it wanted to achieve, or anything along these lines

i read the autumn/winter edition of the Good Internet Magazine on the day it arrived: https://goodinternetmagazine.com/ it's a cozy digital-and-print publication about the indie web, very accessible to everyone, not just to technologists reading it reignited some of the desire to build an experience on the web that lies outside the norm of "usefulness" and "coherence" i'm grateful to all authors and to @xandra for orchestrating it #indieweb...

after more than a decade as an intruder in the software development industry, i feel like i've finally seen enough of technology & politics to retroactively contextualize all my pain the way my body looks and my insistence on coherent affect really did not make me a "good programmer" from the point-of-view of my former colleagues and superiors now i can "see like a government". i can also see like the profit-driven industry that is allergic t...

i attended a collective reading of the Vectorialism zine, published by UnderGND[dot]online: https://undergnd.online/zine#vectoralism i was immensely excited to read this, since i work as a software developer (so i am part of the "problem"), i work on tech advocacy (which is a category completely omitted in the zine) and i tinker and (self)deploy tech, so i'm presumably also called on to be part of the solution first things first: reading a zine together with others is...

#fosdem gave me an opportunity to have several chats about living under the specter of war and the specter of fascism the idea i has in my head, going into #fosdem, was "doing nothing is not an option" in our talks, folx were expressing that they don't read the news. some said they feel powerless, so they prefer to "not know" this led me to think about how i can embolden and encourage people to engage with the world in a way that specifically gives them the experience...
