COSMIC has been out for seven months and a lot has happened in that short time. The blog was written as a six month progress report but Frosted Glass took a tad bit longer to refine and I really wanted it in there 😅 https://system76.com/blog/post/cosmic-de-first-seven-months

Some folks pointed out language in the SB51 OSS exemption could not include the GPL due to redistribution conditions. Improved the language for clarity. ARTICLE 30 DOES NOT APPLY TO: AN OPERATING SYSTEM PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER THAT DISTRIBUTES AN OPERATING SYSTEM OR APPLICATION UNDER LICENSE TERMS THAT PERMIT A RECIPIENT TO COPY, REDISTRIBUTE, AND MODIFY THE SOFTWARE WITHOUT PLATFORM-IMPOSED TECHNICAL OR CONTRACTUAL RESTRICTIONS BY THE PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER ON INSTALLING MODIFIED VERSIONS.

PC Gamer: "My time with Linux has been eye-opening, genuinely. Pop! OS is such a beautiful place to be. There was never a day when I got back to the office that I wasn't looking forward to booting up my PC and getting to do some work in the Cosmic environment." https://www.pcgamer.com/software/linux/ive-spent-30-years-with-microsoft-but-linux-and-pop-os-might-have-converted-me/

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is getting closer to shipping pre-loaded on @system76 hardware. DDOS attacks on Ubuntu infra slowed things down. We built new infrastructure to remove our Launchpad dependency and speed up releases moving forward.

If you use "Show desktop", when do you use it (for what purpose). What do you do after showing the desktop? Thinking about the feature for COSMIC.

California amended their AB-1856 Age Attestation law to exclude open source software using the Colorado exemption example. Thank you to the folks in California advocating for open source. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1856&utm_source=chatgpt.com

The amended CO SB51 bill with a strong exemption for open source distros and apps was passed in the house committee. THIS ARTICLE 30 DOES NOT APPLY TO: AN OPERATING SYSTEM PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER THAT DISTRIBUTES AN OPERATING SYSTEM OR APPLICATION UNDER LICENSE TERMS THAT PERMIT A RECIPIENT TO COPY, REDISTRIBUTE, AND MODIFY THE SOFTWARE WITHOUT RESTRICTION FROM THE PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER, INCLUDING ANY TECHNICAL OR CONTRACTUAL RESTRICTIONS ON INSTALLING ALL MODIFIED VERSIONS.

Update on the Colorado Age Attestation bill: Everyone that participated in the meeting last week submitted proposed changes to the bill. They included good ideas to improve consumer protection and privacy and exempt open source software. Sen. Ball responded this morning that they'll now draft potential amendments. I think we're making good progress. I'm off for a ski weekend with the kids. Have a great weekend everyone!

The @system76 support experience: "Friday morning at 10:59, I got a response. Not an auto-reply. An actual human. I replied at 12:01 with the details they needed. At 12:08, Alex K. from support escalated me to hardware RMA. Seven minutes. I've never seen that in decades of enterprise support." https://blog.vintagetechie.com/one-week-door-to-door/

Perhaps the most perverse consequence of age verification laws: many require advertising the age bracket of the user to the open web. Children will be known to be children even to those that would exploit that information without regard for any other "safety" law.

Today, I met with Colorado Senator Matt Ball, co-author of Colorado OS Age Attestation Bill SB26-051. Sen. Ball suggested excluding open source software from the bill. This appears to be a real possibility. Amendments are expected for the CA age attestation bill. It's my hope we can move fast enough to influence excluding open source in the CA bill amendments. No illusions, it's an uphill battle, but we have an open door to advocate for the open source community.
