#mathober is starting today – one math prompt per day to express yourself in some way! https://www.fractalkitty.com/mathober-2026-prompts/ Day 1: "Perimeter of an Ellipse" Calculating the perimeter requires elliptic integrals. But I learned about a pretty efficient method to approximate it, which uses the arithmetic-geometric mean! In my drawing, all ellipses have the same perimeter! Imagine squishing and stretching a piece of wire. Coded in #p5js, then drawn using #krita. #math #m...

I discovered #tic80 (a retro-looking "fantasy console") around 2019. I enthusiastically used it, advocated for it, taught it to kids a lot, and contributed to the code. Three weeks ago, the maintainer started using LLM tools to review and write PRs, and seems to be using them for communication, as well. I actively avoid such communities. I'm so sad. It feels like losing something I loved. Does anyone know #creativecoding projects with a no-LLM contribution policy?

I'm writing a small tool that helps you find your most liked/boosted toots or threads, from an archive of your Mastodon account! I wanna use it in combination with https://codeberg.org/blinry/threadcat, to find popular threads to turn into blog posts. 1) What features would you like to see in a tool like this? It already supports CSV and JSON export, any other formats? What statistics would be important for you per toot/thread? 2) I'm still thinking about a good name. tootstat? topthr...

Can someone recommend a cozy Mastodon instance for hosting bot accounts? Mourning botsin.space today. Would like to give future #fedifriends bots a better home, and maybe build a nostalgia bot that retoots my old toots randomly...

Ever wished you could have multiple independent mouse cursors on your Linux machine? No? Anyway, turns out Wayland supports that pretty well! Let me tell you what I learned: https://blinry.org/multi-seat-wayland/

Me and a bunch of friends are going to do a "search engine-free day" tomorrow! On that day, visiting Wikipedia, MDN or StackOverflow directly and using their search feature would be permitted, but we'll try not to use general-purpose search engines (and no LLMs). I'm curious how this will break my habits; where I'll miss search engines most, and which other ways of finding information we'll discover. I'm sharing this so that if this resonates with you, you can jo...

In our kitchen, the only device that displays the time is our oven! :D So… can anyone recommend a wall clock? A really fun/quirky/retro/nerdy one? It would work best for us if it's (mostly) silent.

We wrote a tool that helps you coordinate which talks to watch with your friends! Giggity (an open-source conference schedule viewer for Android) recently got a new feature: You can share your bookmarked events as a URL! So @piko and I built a website that compares multiple of these URLs and shows you how they overlap! Let us know what you think! We got it working just in time for #gpn24! 😅 ⭐ https://cotalx.blinry.org 🗓️

Let's start with the "Inspector", which shows you the tree of HTML elements. You can directly summon it, and inspect a specific element on your current site by pressing Ctrl+Shift+C (Cmd+Opt+C on macOS), and then clicking your element. This is similar to right-clicking the element, and pressing Q, but I like Ctrl+Shift+C a bit better because it will give you a live preview of which node you are picking!

Do you know the tingly feeling of being on the verge of a new hobby? Realizing that there's a lot to learn about that topic, being excited about entering the rabbit hole? What's the last time that has happened to you? For me, currently, it's #swimming! 🏊 I decided to start this training program, that builds up a distance of 1.5 km over six weeks: http://ruthkazez.com/swimming/ZeroTo1mile.html And there's a lot for me to learn indeed! I never learned to front crawl, for example…

This week, I put a fully-functioning Linux in a website, running entirely in client-side Javascript! 🐧 https://linuxpuzzles.blinry.org 🐧 It's a prototype for making web-based command line tutorials. Compared to a game or tool you have to download, I hope they will be much more accessible. ✨

We updated our contribution policy for @teamtype last week, which now states the following: "We do not accept any contributions that contain content generated by LLMs. This also includes all written communication on GitHub. We will close any pull request, issue, or discussion that does not comply to this policy." In our team, we have different reasons for this, but myself, I have a few of them: 🧵

I learned the basics of how to fly a (simulated) Airbus A320 this week! Going from being completely overwhelmed to knowing what some of these buttons do, was a very satisfying experience. Taking off is easier than landing, though! 😅 #flightgear

Today, I'm doing another attempt at hiking 100 km around Hamburg in 24 hours! Last year, I had to abort after 30 km, due to unexpected blisters on my feet. 😖 But this time, I've brought double-layered socks, blister bandaids, new (but already worn-in) shoes, and a determination to not walk too fast early on! :) Let's see how this goes. But first, I'm taking a ferry to the starting point! ⛴️

I'm working on a little Rust tool this week that takes the URL to a Mastodon thread, and converts it to a Markdown blog post. It also downloads all included media files automatically, including alt text. Now my question is: What should this tool be called? (Also open for more suggestions, and for feature requests – would such a tool be useful to you?)

You'd roughly need to: - Figure out which program is currently focused - Figure out the Git repo of this software - Clone it into a temporary directory - Set up the required tools to start hacking on it and compile it As a quick prototype, I wrote a li'l Bash script that does some of these things. It makes heavy use of #nix and #nixpkgs: https://codeberg.org/blinry/view-source-button I enters a "dev shell" with the required tools already in the PATH, and even sets up a Git...

Say hello to `threadcat`! 🧶🐱 It's a little Rust tool which takes the URL to a Mastodon thread, and converts it to a Markdown file. It also downloads all attached media files (and their alt texts)! That way, it's really easy to get a "first draft" for a blog post from a thread you wrote! Installation: `cargo install threadcat` ➡️ https://codeberg.org/blinry/threadcat ⬅️

There's something really special next to Helsinki's central station: A building called "Oodi", which describes itself as "an innovative library reaching for the future".
