Had to download the entire OSM dataset. Turns out they produce a daily torrent dump of only 80Gb. Don't even need to consume OSM resources. Fantastic.

A nice ~/.pdbrc from Trey Hunner. They have a nice format, and don’t require parenthesis. I have something similar using rich. https://treyhunner.com/2026/04/customizing-pdb-with-pdbrc/

Damn it, bluesky had this brief moment where it was not twitter yet lively. Now we are getting the terrible takes, political spams, random brain farts and sucky memes, creeping up in the timeline. I can barely use the discover tab anymore without rolling my eyes. Can't even say it had a good run.

Time for your monthly dose of manually curated and analyzed Python news. And for this April, we got Frame pointers, sentinel values, venv discovery, and more rust in Python... https://www.bitecode.dev/p/whats-up-python-frame-pointers-sentinel

Also took the opportunity to freshen up one more old article: The curse of being good in IT https://www.bitecode.dev/p/the-curse-of-being-good-in-it This one didn't have code in it, so it's mostly typos. Still think it's a good piece that should stand the test of time.

https://coredispatch.xyz is a new blog that gives you a monthly recap of what happens in the Python core dev world. I'll add it to my info source for the monthly digest. Maybe I should publish the list of all the sites I read, or better, an RSS feed so you can get it yourself.

BiteCode has a RSS feed (https://www.bitecode.dev/feed), you don't have to use social networks or subscribe to the newsletter. But I noticed many people don't even know what RSS is, or why it's much better than "subscribe" and email notification, at least for the end user. Maybe I should write a tutorial.

I cleaned up the old "Ultra beginners first steps for the terminal on Windows" article: https://www.bitecode.dev/p/ultra-beginners-first-steps-for-the The usual typos and code coloration. It's super important for total beginners in Python. Too many tutorials assume one knows those. This is silly; we all had to learn them.

Today I hit the first article that REALLLLLY benefitted from the new code coloration: "Doit: the goodest python task-runner you never heard of" https://www.bitecode.dev/p/doit-the-goodest-python-task-runner I'm amazed that people had the patience to read this before honestly.

For the end of the week, I gave love to "Make your Python life easier by learning how imports find things" https://www.bitecode.dev/p/making-your-python-life-easier-by Sometimes violence is necessary, so I just killed the entire intro. This way it starts directly with the main topic at hand and not blog fluff. If you see other articles that could benefit from the same decapitation, because I fell into the trap of liking my writing for the sake of it, let me know while the s...

My framwork 13 was struggling today, yet no big workload. In jest, I asked claude to diagnose. It said too high temp, harware issue. I opened the laptop, the battery was swolen. Ok, that's a good catch boy!

I never thought I would see the day, but from now on I can't tell people to "just google it" https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/

Update about the framework battery situation: - My battery was swollen and needed to be changed - My warranty had expired ONE day BEFORE I contacted support - They quickly and clearly dealt with me, and sent me a replacement for free I guess I am indeed going to be a long-term customer.

I received my battery today (so one week after they said they would send it) by fedex. Opening the laptop and swapping the battery took 5 minutes. Took the opportunity to unmount the fan and clean it up since I was at it and it’s so quick and easy.

@mweagle I'd add: - We actually should do this. - What's this? - Who are you? And what are you doing in my office?

@mitsuhiko Between this and Pydantic monty announcement, all those different approaches to sandboxing popping everywhere is fantastic news for people with an "alias yolo=claude --dangerously-skip-permission" way of life. Would love to have a quick video on how you use it in your daily workflow. Maybe with Pi, even.
