I’m not convinced this is a wise announcement at a time the best brains in New Zealand politics are thinking about how they can deal with rapacious supermarkets. At the very least it won’t help their PR whitewashing. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/1646794/woolworths-confirms-plan-to-move-130-jobs-to-australia

I've learnt over the years is that if you can isolate and define the problem you're trying to solve clearly enough, it's a lot easier to find the answer. Sometimes it IS the answer. This is what you do when you write an AI prompt. If you write a good enough prompt you may already have the answer.

To be honest I'm slightly surprised the local peasants are not turning up at Woolworths and New World stores with pitchforks and burning torches.

I’ve said this before and will say it again. If you think social media is so toxic that it damages 16-year-olds then it damages everyone. You don’t magically become immune on your 17th birthday. Either ban it for everyone or not at all.

@tinker@infosec.exchange I do this here in Auckland, it feels like a typical session is 45% vacuum cleaners, 45% toasters and 10% anything else, although in reality it is 33, 33, 33. Lately there have been a lot more rice cookers.

The fact that my iPhone autocorrects block cheese to bloke cheese when I type out my shopping list is evidence that AI is not entirely rubbish.

Today was my worst ever run rate at a Repair Cafe, almost everything that came across my table was unrepairable. Also noted how much busier the Cafe is now the economy is ticking down again.

I'm not sure how to articulate this thought in a way that is inoffensive, but I sometimes wonder if being an Act party member or voter is a sign of metal illness.

These kind of numbers are often publicised, but does anyone ever actually follow up to see if Microsoft delivers on its huge promises? I used to do this when working as a staff journalist and found the numbers never even remotely stacked up. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-04-23/microsoft-commits-18-billion-to-build-australian-ai-capacity

This is not my area of expertise, but I can read and I can do arithmetic, from what I read and the numbers I see, it's clear to me that supplies of oil products are almost certainly going to run out unless the Iran war wraps up now. It strikes me that our government is in denial.

My team, Chelsea, is going such through a terrible patch that I thought I might at least get enjoyment out of seeing Tottenham relegated, but I really don't. It's just a sadder, more dysfunctional, hide-behind-the-sofa mess than our sad dysfunctional mess.
