@Tempest@burningboard.net Did you look at https://misskey.fediverse.observer? There are 1125 Misskey sites listed, and at least some of them are English-speaking. There are also 549 Sharkey sites, and I realize you have reservations about that platform, but…I dunno, the folks who make it seem nice. @HailsandAles@metalhead.club

A silver lining to the dark cloud of #ageVerification: “I worry that this bill risks isolating teens in unsupportive households by giving their parents control of their online access and exposing teens in bad home situations to harm if their private conversations are revealed to their parents.” —Rep Frank Pallone (D-NJ) 👏 F***ing thank you. Social media bans and in-home video surveillance don't protect kids. They put kids in physical danger. https://rollcall.com/2026/09/01/panel-punts-kid...

Two fascinating things about #LooneyTunes #MerrieMelodies that didn't really occur to me as a kid: 1. There is exactly one voice actor: Mel Blanc. Every single character on the entire show is VA'd by that one guy. 😳 2. As the name of the show implies, the music is tightly synchronized to the action. Everything every character does—footsteps, eye blinks, everything—is accompanied by some musical notes (unless it's accompanied by a sound effect). #retrocartooning

The country's on fire, the economy's on fire, and the politicians' top priority is to…make sure nobody can talk about it except through Elon Musk's platform. Because that will somehow protect children.

Just tried to reboot my Pixel 6 into #Android 16, and…the #phone is stone-cold dead. Black screen, no response to buttons, power+volume doesn't work. This is not acceptable! When a PC operating system gets bricked, you can still boot into BIOS, enable booting from USB, and use a rescue/installer USB stick to repair or reinstall the OS. Can we please have #phones that are similarly fail-safe? Not this unreliable nonsense? Thanks. 😡

🚨 The text is up https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/s5090/text for S.5090, a federal Digital Age Assurance Act, and it is very not good: * There is no #OpenSource exemption! * It requires users to “establish an account with the provider”. (§3(a)(1)(A)(i)) This makes local/offline accounts, as is typical on #Linux, #Windows 10, etc, illegal. [see thread; there's much more] This #ageVerification bill is a dramatic escalation in the politicians' war against #privacy and #FOSS. C...

I just realized that #Xerox is no longer synonymous with copying things. It used to be that “Xerox” was a verb, much like “Google” is now. But I haven't heard anyone talk about “xeroxing” something in ages. Vernacular marches on, I guess. #retrocomputing #retrocopying

I do enjoy doing fun #SQL tricks to clean up a database. 😌 Fun fact: if you have a newline-separated list of identifiers you need to use in a query, you can turn it into comma separated by piping it to `tr '\n' ','`. Then you can use it in a SQL IN clause. But beware that this only works if your list contains nothing but integers! Otherwise you need to wrap string quotes around the lines first, escape them, etc, lest you fall prey to SQL injection. #database #programming

@HaTetsu@mastodon.com.pl That “doctrine” is nothing more than a marketing campaign. LLMs aren't magic. There is nothing they can do that human security researchers can't. Either a bug is exploited in the wild, or it isn't. @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems

Out of curiosity, are there any nonprofit #DNS hosting providers these days? I was nostalgiaing about DynDNS and Monolith back in the day. Sadly, the latter closed up shop, and the former slowly turned into a for-profit business and then sold to Oracle.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you expect a slow, primitive silicon-transistor computer to think faster than a human brain, you're gonna be disappointed. I'm not saying it's impossible to surpass the human brain in intelligence, but I am saying we're nowhere near reaching that point, and this technology isn't going to get us there. My advice: use transistors for what they're good at, namely deterministic computation. If you want to create intelligence,...

I just found out that @borgbackup@fosstodon.org #Borg #BorgBackup is vibe coded now. That's a tragedy. Really upsetting, to be honest. I've been safeguarding priceless data with Borg for years, but I obviously can't entrust something so important to code that wasn't written by skilled hands and reviewed by skilled minds. What full-system #backup software for #Linux do people recommend instead?

In light of all the #Linux drama lately, I thought I'd glance at what are the #FreeBSD equivalents to the various software I use. Well, the network configuration story is very not good. You know how Linux has NetworkManager? On FreeBSD, if you want to configure network interfaces by GUI, you…run a GUI app as root via sudo. https://github.com/ghostbsd/networkmgr/blob/324b90ce3775928692032f1f6cef9ed5ee097962/src/networkmgr.desktop Which then shells out to sysrc to apply configuration settin...

Kinda feel like I need to just abandon ship on the whole #npm ecosystem for my #webdev work, what with all the supply-chain attacks. The arrival of the new TypeScript compiler written in Go, and Sass being written in Dart, means this isn't entirely impossible. That means giving up on my plans to use 11ty, though. Need a static site generator written in some other language. I've seen some that were written in Go/Rust/etc, but they aren't extensible, which is show-stopping for me…

A #CRT isn't the only way to scan a phosphor screen with a particle beam! You could also use a laser. This avoids most of the problems with CRTs: * No heavy envelope or dangerous vacuum. Light isn't blocked by air. * No high voltage. Lasers don't need it. * No x-ray emissions. * Lasers use less power. Only thing is how do you deflect the beam? Best answer so far: mechanically, with a moving mirror. Sounds pretty fragile. Still, neat. Retro-futuristic “what's old is new again”...

So here's the problem with age verification. It's expensive. Insanely so. PrivateAV is one of the cheaper options. $30 for 1000 verifications per month. https://www.privateav.com/pricing More than enough for an average Fedi site, you say? Only if failed attempts don't count toward the limit. What if a bunch of kids show up and make dozens of failed attempts each? What if a bunch of bots show up and make millions of failed attempts each? The site's chatbot is broken and does no...
