Seriously, quote tweeting to dunk on someone is a tool but it's not one you should just use all the time, and it cuts the target pretty good at times.

I wonder if there's a correlation in the attitudes of people who started their career when everything was rapidly changing vs not and their later attitudes toward change in their work.

Here's a couple thought experiments: Would you allow an AI company to make a model trained off your open source licensed work, if the model was guaranteed to be open weights under an MIT-like license, and the training dataset was public? And Do you think that the existing licenses of open source work allow this already? (answers may vary by license)

Would any of y'all be interested in an archival curation tool that can handle merging large collections of files? I'm in the middle of designing something — git is inspiration but the wrong tool for this job — but that allows reintegrating diverged collections of materials, and propagating enough information that if you were to merge two folders, you'd get a relevant set of questions about the contents to successfully and meaningfully merge them. It's aware of the fact that emb...

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@ifin/116834521039597035 Hot take but TLD-blocking is mostly just enforcing US hegemony. It was that when it was .biz and .xyz that everyone was blocking. Maybe if you're gonna do that get the registrar and block domains based on that.

Periodic reminder that “rate your pain on a scale from 1 to 10" is bullshit without reference points. People with chronic pain, tough guys, people with intense periods, and people who struggle with interoception all struggle when the endpoints are nebulous. Let me introduce you to the DVPRS: https://www.va.gov/WHOLEHEALTHLIBRARY/docs/Defense-and-Veterans-Pain-Rating-Scale.pdf It even works if you substitute pain for general impact. If you're asked to rate a symptom on a scale...

RE: https://tldr.nettime.org/@tante/116533120069023831 The quoted toot is dismal and true But know that if you want to learn, people are willing to show you. You have to bring the will to learn because the temptation to skip learning will be everywhere. But if you're curious when the curmudgeonly old techie who's holding the system together says something surprising, ask them about it. We will tell you. If you want to learn and you're not employed, I cannot state this...

RE: https://toot.cafe/@baldur/116517473443533667 A thousand times this. The kneejerk anti-Chinese everything is such a pain because it means we fail to learn lessons that are well known and fail to do things that work easily. Doesn't mean it's not also a regime with some real strong authoritarianism, with some real problems.

One thing I don't see anyone talking about that we probably should is the proliferation of captcha-busting anubis-busting browser-as-a-service services. It's not that the big model companies are scraping the web and ignoring robots.txt. (Some are, almost certainly, but there are datasets to train on already and they're not scraping random sites so much) It's that agent _users_ and the people serving them have a very large demand to access information with semi-...

EVEN WHEN THEY ARE WORKING RIGHT, "AI" systems are hallucinating. They hallucinate in line with reality most of the time, and sometimes they diverge. That's the whole thing. They're _useful_ but when they're _right_ that's either a function of guardrails and checks that've put in place, or an accident. Usually it's an accident. Plan accordingly.

Be careful. "It's AI slop" is turning into a thought-terminating cliche. Even though it's true often, the actual use of the phrase is starting to be a shortcut to dismissing things without using our brains. And that is itself a kind of slop. Learn to notice it because doing it consciously is exhausting, but knowing when you're being cognitively lazy is a step to being a bit more resistant to bad ideas and being manipulated.

RE: https://mamot.fr/@thibaultamartin/116368015104267206 This. It's worth asking deeply what lets it happen, given that people _have_ been beaten down and aren't used to using their creativity and ambition to do things. There is so damn much untapped human potential.
