#Fedilab has left the Google Play Store. You can update your Google version manually using the APK files attached to the release notes. For automatic updates shortly after the release, I recommend switching to Fedilab's custom F-Droid repository. See how to do that in the next message of this thread. (1/2)

#Fedilab 3.45.1 fixes a crash with art timelines and Pixelfed timelines. If you use those, skip 3.45.0 when it releases on F-Droid. Furthermore, a bug with the new "show description on hidden media" feature was fixed. To everyone: I am taking a long break. Thank you for your support over all these years (9 years now). The Fedi is the best place I know. Everyone is welcome here, and yes, it is political. We want a safe place for everyone. I have met so many good people who fight for their rights every day against extremists. The Fedi is about humans respecting humans. I am stepping back because I can no longer handle the pressure of development, and it is affecting me personally. Keep this place safe ❤️

Hey @pixelfed@mastodon.social, I am not sure where to find the API docs, especially for the endpoints that differ from the Mastodon API. I would like to support them in #Fedilab. Thank you for your work!

#Fedilab 3.45.0 has been published! It brings several improvements and fixes. You can now add a colored mark next to avatars in timelines to easily identify content from some accounts. Large media files are automatically resized to what your instance supports. You can also publish directly from the message preview feature. There are also many fixes, especially a lot of work on catching gaps in the Home timeline. Release notes: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/releases/tag/3.45.0

With #HolosDiscover we checked multiple criteria before indexing: "indexable" enabled, account not locked, no #nobot or #noindex in bio, not in opted-out list, only public posts. Every deletion, edit or block was processed instantly via #ActivityPub. Google uses that same "indexable" flag but ignores everything else, keeps deleted content cached for weeks. We shut it down after pushback. Was that the right call? Don't hesitate to share, this concerns the whole Fediverse.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/117356490973995072 Damn, I am clearly bad at promoting my work after almost 10 years here :) That's crazy to me. After years of contributing, I am just happy when donations cover part of a new computer.

For those who still see gaps in their home timeline with #Fedilab, there is an open issue on #CodeBerg where I published two new APKs today: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues/1410#issuecomment-24200376 This comment explains how to send reports: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues/1410#issuecomment-23273524 Feel free to help. You can safely install the APK (Google or #FDroid version, from the custom repo) without breaking updates.

I have a funny habit: when I take a break at home, instead of locking my computer, I leave an empty text editor open. When I come back, I read what my cats had to say.

In #FediHood, there are as many American accounts as German ones. Yes, I am still amazed by how German people have adopted FediHood.

When we adopted Haru, our black cat, he had spent his first two years in a shelter. He was shy and fearful. Now he has completely changed, and he loves coming to us for pets. After a month of preparation, we are welcoming Foxy (her original name). She is three years old and has spent two years in the shelter. Adopting an animal is a serious decision that shouldn't be made on impulse. Adoption takes time. Animals come with their own history, and our role is to help them build a new life.

I am discovering #Vernissage and I just created my account there. I was surprised by the News section, which gives full transparency about donations and how the money was spent: https://vernissage.photos/news/7681636639113743034 Their discovery timeline is just beautiful! I was amazed. A question for artists: why isn't Vernissage better known? Are there barriers I haven't noticed?

Six years ago, I rescued Milka. He was covered in oil, but like every cat, he is the boss now. He gives the kids a good excuse not to make their beds. Too many animals are abandoned every year. Animals are not toys. They deserve our love, and they give it back.

#FediForum will take place on 6 and 7 October. I still don't feel comfortable presenting, but I might get a ticket to listen to other contributors. https://fediforum.org/

I often read kind messages supporting Fedilab, and I am really grateful for them. There are two of us behind the scenes, @HurricaneWeasel@mastodon.world and me. Some active reporters already know him. He helps me a lot with the Fedilab account, and mostly with his wonderful work on issues. He listens to you and prioritizes issues on Codeberg, which keeps me from drowning. He even does a gradual rollout of issues so I don't get discouraged :) Joking aside, a big thank you, Marco, for your val...

Just a reminder for people using #Mastodon compatible software: you can add a media description to your profile and header pictures. #Fedilab lets you add them through your profile. To see descriptions from other accounts, tap their profile or header picture to open it, then tap it again to display the media description.

In Fedilab there are several app icons available. Some of them are there to show support for people in their fight for freedom.

If you have an app that relies on alternative frontends such as #Invidious, #Nitter and others, it's often hard to maintain a list of instances. I had that problem with #UntrackMe and #CastLab, so a CI job now runs every day to maintain a list of available instances. I might add support for this to #Fedilab. Currently DMs no longer work for #Pixelfed with #Fedilab. There was a breaking change in the API. I am waiting to get more details before adding this new behavior to the app. Thanks for your patience.

#Fedilab 3.44.0 has been published! You can now preview messages before posting. Home filters (long press on the tab) are now also available for local, public and list timelines. This version also includes several fixes, such as large gaps in the home timeline. If you still have issues, a tool lets you share anonymized data to help find what went wrong. Contrary to what some people say, #HolosDiscover is not a scraper. It speaks #ActivityPub, and every deleted or edited post is immediately updated in the database. It relies on the #Fediverse indexable flag, with stricter rules: accounts with #NoBot or #NoIndex in their profile, and locked accounts, are excluded. Only public posts are indexed. I recently fixed a bug where the #NoIndex tag in bios was not respected. Sorry about that. https://discover.holos.social/

Just a small reminder, if you appreciate my work on my projects: #Fedilab #CastLab #FediHood #HolosSocial #Fedle You can support them through #Liberapay https://liberapay.com/tom79 Or #KoFi: https://ko-fi.com/tom79 Thank you for considering it, if you can. Your support helps me keep going.

RE: https://mastodon.world/@HurricaneWeasel/117297723111116308 For the reverse timeline in #Fedilab, I should thank you for your patience. At one point, I even thought I would not manage to make it work smoothly with all the options Fedilab offers. Each time I fixed one issue, I was creating another one.

I have been on the Fediverse for 9 years. For personal reasons, I always refused to put myself forward, even at meetups. Speaking publicly is hard for me, especially in a language that is not my mother tongue. I know it might hurt my work, but I feel more comfortable just doing what I do, even if I miss opportunities. If what I do helps others, I am happy. That is enough for me. Thank you for your understanding.

I spent a lot of time fixing bugs in #Fedilab, but what features are you missing the most?

  • View post

RE: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/117246306213045632 I swore not to speak about #FediHood any more, but what #Pixelfed is doing is great news for #ActivityPub. Pixelfed already sends the location as a Place object with latitude and longitude, so FediHood can read it and put markers on a map. Local timelines used to mean one instance. Now they can mean people actually around you.

Dropping the Google version of the app was a pleasure. I could finally remove all their restrictions: - Register an account with #Fedilab - Donation links - Hard-coded filters for #PeerTube containing "download" and "YouTube" The APK that I attach to release notes is signed with the same key, so Play users can install it over their current version. I know Google is the best way to be known, but it has a price I am no longer willing to pay.

#Fedilab 3.43.4 has been published. It mostly fixes bugs and adds enhancements flagged as high priority. Full release notes: https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/releases/tag/3.43.4 PS: The Google APK is attached, with their restrictions removed.

I would like to share my experience of building #FediHood. While I still think that building timelines around you is an interesting enhancement for the #Fediverse, I think I was wrong about the way I did it. Many people are interested, but not enough to create another account just for that feature. They want it with their current account. I am happy to see #Pixelfed implementing it, and that is the way it should be done.
