Yesterday gave me pause. I was running a San Francisco South Asian Radical History Walking Tour yesterday, with a group of thirty-ish Brown/Desi/Muslim/SSWANA college students. We start with a land acknowledgement, then read from an 1850s SF newspaper editorial that frames South Asians and Muslims as part of the diversity of the city. Text like that, I say, is literal proof that we have been here, and this is our city too. (1/6)

“I don’t really know how to process that information. It’s not just that we’re going back to a Jim Crow state of affairs—it’s that white people are happy about it. As if the 60 years of post-apartheid America that were ushered in by the VRA were just an unfortunate detour, and now white people can get back to their preferred route.” https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/vra-comey-musk-atlman/

“Many people consider California a sanctuary state, in part because of a 2017 law limiting cooperation between local police and federal immigration authorities. In fact, state law requires that prison authorities identify people who may be subject to deportation and to coordinate custody transfers with ICE.” https://www.themarshallproject.org/2026/05/02/ca-ice-prison-oregon
