@iamnotU @platlas that's some pretty aggressive apathy. I think there's a healthy balance of how much to care about what other people do

don't worry everyone. codeberg is down, but thankfully, we all collectively, wisely invested in version control technology that stores issue metadata, merge request metadata, and user account metadata in the same decentralized manner as the code, so we can continue to work like normal, and periodically synchronize with each other, peer-to-peer style good thing we didn't foolishly all get used to using a separate DB for metadata that causes vendor lock in and requires high web server upt...

@wolfpld@mastodon.gamedev.place it's a brilliant primitive, especially if the compiler supports a safety option to turn all of them into traps

in a world full of misinformation and misdirection, we desperately need enhanced skepticism skills to navigate it. but I fear the opposite is happening - as we scroll infinitely and refresh constantly, we take in ever more information undigested, unexamined I think the antidote is less news, less social media, more slow information like books, more one-on-one interactions more original thought

"don't talk about politics" hits differently when the people saying it live in a different U.S. state as you, and are actively supporting the masked, armed thugs invading your city and hurting your neighbors and family members it feels like being kicked while you're down and told to just shut the fuck up, by the people you thought were your friends

In a way, computing embodies the essence of humanity. We take a blank canvas of electrical fields - a purely physical phenomenon, devoid of inherent meaning - and imbue it with assumptions, values, and purpose, manifesting order despite a chaotic, uncaring universe; creating beautiful pockets of defiant structure, each clock cycle shielding these brittle gardens from entropy's relentless encroachment.

Just got tagged by someone on Mastodon with what seemed like an organic post that happened to mention me, but in reality it was LLM generated advertisement slop disguised as a blog post aimed at enticing specific individuals by tagging them. It's like the spear phishing equivalent of marketing. Maddening. And I can't even publicly shame them because that would just be giving them traffic.

you know how when you're a kid, you can't really make permanent mistakes? if you do it's kinda your parents fault, you know? until you become a teenager and then you start doing things like driving a car, having sex, saying yes or no to drugs, and all the sudden your choices are permanent for your entire life I feel like humanity itself has entered its teenage years. video related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC2eSujzrUY

"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Zig 0.16.0 is tagged. Release notes are just about completed and will be published in about 20 hours when the tarballs finish building. As it turns out, it takes a while to build LLVM 27 times on one computer! That's how many different targets we provide compiler binaries for now - all cross compiled from one host.

we've built our global economy on the premise that software has a certain bar of quality, which as it turns out was based only on the goodwill of early enthusiast programmers. now that the market has caught up and erased the negotiation power software engineers once enjoyed, the world is careening head first into a harsh reality of bug-ridden, adversarial software at odds with everyday life. free software is still our north star. it's more important than ever.
