So apparently don't plan on traveling in LA during the LA Olympics. "Hundreds of miles of Southern California freeways and streets will become permit-only “Games Route Network” lanes during the 2028 Olympics, reshaping everyday commutes from L.A. to Orange and San Diego counties." https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-09-05/la-freeways-roads-to-be-closed-to-general-traffic-for-2028-olympics-how-will-it-hit-your-commute #LA28 #Olympics #LosAngeles

I have a new challenge. One of my kids friends got banned from Instagram, and apparently tried to create an account on X. I of course said how about mastodon, and kid said "that's just old people". So I'd really like to have an alternative to X to suggest. Is there anything on the fediverse that's decent for teens?

@movim@piaille.fr I asked my discord using kid, and they use google meet for video calls instead of Discords built in tools. So I think the bundle of related rooms is probably most important. I personally think tools to streamline moderation and being able to kick out harassers is a big reason why group chat tools are more popular than public forums or microblogging tools.

A friend who's a professor at CSU campus asked me my opinion about if it's safe to log into canvas. This was my answer. So I'm not involved in the recovery so I don't have any certainty. This is Instructures write up but when I read it it seemed pretty useless at this point basically saying we hired some contractors to help us figure out what happened. https://www.instructure.com/incident_update Here's a security journalist's write up. https://krebsonsecurity.com/20...

So because putting food waste into a landfill causes methane leaks and worsens global warming California mandated the use of a compost bin and now compost gets picked up separately from trash. Of course plenty of people are morons and don't bother reading the signs and so put non-compost into the compost bin. Given the upcoming fertilizer shortages, I wonder if the commercial compost programs are generating sufficiently unpolluted compost that it can actually be used to fertilize crops.

I added a new steam controller to my cart a few seconds after it was available on May 4th, but it took me until almost 10:30 to get the payment button to work. There were warnings messages saying delivery might take 6-10 days. A shipping label was created this morning and UPS says it should be delivered tomorrow. Good job lowering my expectations there Valve, so you can turn around and beat them.

Dear Guile documentation Your typographical convention of using single quotes around character literals is confusing to people used to C like languages. char? tests that the argument is a character. Writing the literal as written in the documentation: (guile-user)> (char? '#\a') While reading expression: #:30:13: unknown character name a' Realizing the quotes were just a typographical convention: (guile-user)> (char? #\a) $20 = #t (Why did NFL try boosting hasht...

Is it just me or does GNU info not support language localization? The debian guix package installs documentation for a bunch of languages (de, es, fr, (default en), pt_BR, ru, zh_CN). But all the versions get added to my pathetic english speaker's one info/dir file. It really seems like there should be different info/dir files for different languages. (I guess, congratulations to the guix project for being the first people shipping info documentation in enough languages to make this issu...

I thought this was interesting. It's the FRED "Motor Vehicle Retail Sales: Domestic and Foreign Autos" chart for the USA It's kind of interesting how car sales started dropping in 2014, and hit a new low in covid and have never recovered.

Oh I looked in my email and the EFF is looking to get people to lobby against an age gating law for California that would ban anyone under 16 from social media and require everyone else to provide government ID to access social media. https://eff.salsalabs.org/stopcasocialban/index.html AB 1709 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB1709

@Lkdc Here's a Tom Scott bit on a bridge that by treaty happens to be in two countries. There also happens to be a museum to the Schengen Area, and he includes clip of the collection of the hats from the border guards uniforms that were no longer needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw44wHG4KOc

My Firefox can't log into outlook.office365.com Chromium could log into the website, and my mail is there. I hate Microsoft software so much. Their quality was never good, and after OpenAI and Copilot it's even worse.

Reporting from Ukraine had a story of how Ukraine sent some of their drone interceptor teams to the gulf, and have been effective in shooting down Iranian shaheds. This leads to an interesting possible outcome. What if it's Ukraine that reopens the Straight of Hormuz? I bet, that'd get Ukraine a lot of positive diplomatic attention, while making the USA look even more like an aging power well past its prime.

I've been thinking about wars leading to rolling blackouts for civilians, and went searching for how Ukrainians have been dealing with it. I found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZwSlaT2IGc So the first solution was to get large rechargeable power blocks like the ecoflow, with smaller power banks for his router and LED strip lighting. Then the outages got longer and he got a generator, (and then another better generator because the ecoflow is picky about what power it will ac...

Given my problems with climate depression I should probably be smacked over the head with this book. "I wanted, in this horrible moment, to remind people that what the far right is doing globally, I think, is largely backlash. A new world is being born, and they’re basically trying to abort it. Which is a little ironic, given their views on abortion." https://www.theguardian.com/books/2026/mar/25/rebecca-solnit-slow-revolution-far-right-cannot-tolerate

There's a story that 413,793 kit kats were stolen. that seems like a weird number to me, I thought usually if you were shipping something it'd be in friendly human comprehensible boxes. So I decided to factor that number. 3 * 3 * 23 * 1999 seems like a weird set of numbers for boxes. https://apnews.com/article/nestle-switzerland-candy-bar-stolen-kitkat-51073cce27a0e193651aa7f31aaa506e
