In Spain, solar energy generates as much electricity as 27 nuclear power plants during the day. This is leading to increasingly lower electricity prices. This Home Assistant thing is a real rabbit hole. I thought I'd just learn something like "a new Docker container", a couple of days of learning and I'd be done. My ass! HA is a freaking Swiss Army knife: I can automate even the damn toaster, and HA will help me create a new scene for it. If you don't hear from me in the coming weeks, it's because there's no cell service at the bottom of the rabbit hole. Wish me good luck. #selfhosting #...

Roku and TCL are being sued for allegedly bricking smart TVs with bad updates https://www.androidauthority.com/roku-tcl-sued-for-bricked-smart-tvs-3663179/ And that, kids, is yet another reason why your TV or that damn fridge shouldn't need an internet connection to work. #InternetOfShit

Setting up remote access to Bambulab 3D printers that are on a different VLAN than yours is a pain in the ass. Bambulab has chosen the wrong path. It might carve out a niche among users who aren't very tech-savvy when it comes to 3D printing (and who aren’t interested in learning either), but all of us nerds who have used their printers are going to tell them to go to hell. By the way, if you're trying to set up remote access using pfSense or OPNsense, here's a great gu...

Microsoft has really screwed up. When I see users who don't have a clue about computers asking about Linux because they're sick and tired of Windows, things are looking pretty bad for the folks in Redmond. Even though this makes me smile, I can't help but wonder, how could they mess up so badly? #Windows #Linux

I was watching a game via streaming on my browser, and my CPU was running at 78–80 °C (it's an old laptop). If you inspect the page in Firefox and select the "Network" tab, you can find the video's URL. All you have to do is open that URL in mpv, and your computer will run much more smoothly and, in my case, with a CPU temperature 12 degrees lower. #linux #linuxtips

Whenever I'm forced to use commercial, proprietary software, I look into open-source alternatives because I know it's only a matter of time before the company in question tries to fuck me with a random change to its terms of service. By the way, Plex users, welcome to Jellyfin.

You young people don't know this, but the Internet these days is absolute shit. The one I grew up with was a jungle with its good and bad sides, but today's version is almost dystopian. The damn Internet today is designed to drive you crazy the moment you open your browser. Before you even see the content, it feels like they're putting you through a poll. Click here to let us know you're not a bot. - Fuck that. I'm a person, not a terminator. Do you accep...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEm7uWjXw_Q Does this tune sound familiar? I'm sure it does... It's from the original Doom's Gate game. A song that all of us who are starting to get gray hair recognize almost instantly from its first few chords. I'm sad to share the news that its illustrious creator, Bobby Prince, has passed away at the age of 81. Wherever he is, he'll know that his music was and will always be a part of our lives. #gaming #music #doom

I'll be getting my main laptop back soon, on which—for reasons that aren't relevant here—I've had to temporarily install Windows. Now I'm faced with the dilemma of choosing a distro. Since my ThinkPad runs Arch Linux, I'm wondering if it's time to reinstall Fedora. What I do know for sure is that it's time to give Wayland and Hyprland a try, after years of using i3wm. #linux

The average user who switches to Linux goes through several phases: 1. Oh, this is really different from Windows, I’m not really into it. Where are my damn installed programs? 2. Well, it’s not that different. There are windows, folders, and its own app store. 3. I’m still not really into this desktop. I’m going to customize it to my liking… Or maybe I’ll just try another one. 4. I’ve already tried all the desktops, I’m going to check out that WM thing. 5. I think if I remove these services, I...

I had to install Windows 11 on a laptop that was running Arch Linux (don’t ask me why—I’m really pissed off about this), and it was the worst user experience I’ve had in years. 1) The laptop's touchpad didn't work; I had to use a USB mouse. 2) Windows 11 didn't recognize the M.2 drive. Why? No fucking idea. You have to download some drivers (not the typical .exe file, but their .sys, .cat, .info, etc.), insert another USB drive with them, and install them during the W11...

I just discovered that AI can generate code for OpenSCAD, so you can generate files for 3D printing with just geometric descriptions. Part of my company's work is training in 3D design. It had better start pivoting toward other fields. #AI #3Ddesign

PriceGhost is a service that you can run on your server to check the prices of products on Amazon, Aliexpress, etc. at the frequency you select. In addition, if you create a Telegram bot, you can configure it to send you notifications in case of price changes. This way, you don't have to constantly check the price either in the online store or on the PriceGhost web interface. At the moment, it is running in a Docker container on my home server and works like a charm. https://github.com/cl...

I can't watch videos on a sports news website because they won't play without showing the ads first. I open the app for that website and they still won't play because I use pfBlocker-NG on pfSense to block the ads. Deleting the website from my favorites and ditching the app in 3, 2, 1... What a shitty Internet.

Anyone who uses Firefox nowadays does so as an act of rebellion against the Evil Corp, meaning they usually know what they're doing and why. However, Firefox is heading in a different direction and isn't listening to its user community. Want to know what they want for their browser? Ask them. You can do this through market research or a damn online survey. It's not that hard. #firefox

Keep Android Open https://keepandroidopen.org/ "You, the consumer, purchased your Android device believing in Google’s promise that it was an open computing platform and that you could run whatever software you choose on it. Instead, as of September 2026, they will be non-consensually pushing an update to your operating system that irrevocably blocks this right and leaves you at the mercy of their judgement over what software you are permitted to trust". Do you know the fable of the...

When I build a website, I always focus on the backend first, making sure everything works. I always start with the most difficult part and leave the frontend for last because, in theory, it's easier. And it's always the same: 25% of the time is spent on the backend and 75% on the frontend. How is this possible? JS and PHP are really tough, and HTML with CSS is a piece of cake, right? Right?!
