[artix/open-rc/iptables] Why did I have to manually load the ip_tables module? I was setting IP iptables like I have done a billion times before, but when trying to /etc/init.d/iptables save, it said that the kernel doesn’t have support for it. Wut? So I load it with modprobe, only to lose it after a reboot, so I shoved it into modules in mkinitcpio.conf, which seems to have helped. What’s going on? Are we forcibly moving on to nftables?

How do you vet executables? I have found some software on 1337 that a friend was asking for. It’s for Windows and I’m on Linux. Is test running the software inside a VM the only way to securely vet it (to see what connections it tries to make and what processes it starts)? On VirusTotal, I get one positive and 66 negatives. Preferably, I’d like to hand over the software without worrying about giving them malicious code…

How do you remove any trailing characters from a variable in bash? I am digitizing my dad’s video and audio tapes, for which I - after painstakingly scouring the documentation of ffmpeg, as one should - finally have found the encoding options that I’m happy with. :D But instead of retyping the PhD dissertation that are the ffmpeg commands that I use a bazillion times, I have simply started to do command substitution with for instance $(cat command_ffmpeg_COPYCODEC) or $(cat comm...

Can I soft link a non existing executable to an existing one? I am trying to open the cloud provider Internxt’s desktop app. I have Librewolf installed, which I’m sure is going to work as a substitute for Firefox. Can I ln -f /usr/bin/librewolf /usr/bin/firefox to make their app use Librewolf instead, thinking it’s actually executing Firefox? If not, would an alias work?

[brag + followup] configured and compiled a kernel for the first time ever 🛠️ Following the Arch wiki, I built a custom kernel for the first time ever. It was easier that I thought it’d be, probably because the Arch wiki is so thorough and because I didn’t make that many changes… I just enabled a few FireWire related options as per this guide in order to work on this project (or this). Results/takeaways The OS ran fine with the new kernel 💃 I learned how to manually create GRUB entries...

Just a little update: effed by the archaic Geforce GT 220 somehow 😅 Here I thought I had been insanely smart to buy a GPU from 2010 for $10 since the CPU is going to do all the encoding anyway. And because my previous card, a honking 3080, wouldn’t have allowed for the other two capture cards to be installed, taking up all the real estate. I have been trying to setup an Artix system on my own for two hours now, but GRUB won’t install in CSM mode… I’ve tried UEFI on GPT, BIOS on MBR, BIOS on...

Run Linux from USB and use storage only for... storage: yay or nay (and why)? I am just about to set up my new Linux machine, which will be used to convert analog video and audio to digital video and audio. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t run the system off of a live USB stick (say, a good quality one from Sandisk), that is, without installing Linux on the hard drive and not setting up a boot partition, a system partition, and all that?

XLibre support discontinued on Artix […] What I forgot to mention is that metux created huge numbers of commits using AI without checking them, but I never published that until here. When these 3 persons learned about my Xorg advices in our forum they kicked me out of the xlibre team and startd to make my - personal - life hell. Source: https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,10283.msg61637.html#msg61637 It could be that I’m late, but if there are any other Artix users out ther...

YouTube science channels CW: REDDIT AND YOUTUBE LINKS One of my favorites youtubers, Smarter Everyday, seems to have put together a list of science channels on YouTube posted on Reddit about five years ago. Do we know of any lists that are also vetted to be explicitly human made? 😊

What are these ".raw" files the v4l2 saves streams to? I recently bought a PCIe expansion card for FireWire (1394a and 1394b) capture a PCIe expansion card for component video, composite video, VGA and DVI-I capture an nvidia GT 220 GPU to make room in my chassi for the other two cards, because my ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X’s big butt was in the way. When there are too many "options"... So I watched this beautiful but at times hard to watch MASTERPIECE of a short series called Maid on Netflix a few years back. Check IMDB for deets. I wanted to watch it again so I went on fmhy to start comparing a few versions and I kid you not: search term “maid” gave me 90% porn. What was that internet iceberg statistics again? Porn constitutes how many percent of all the data? Have a solemn evening. 🫡🫠

Help me choose a distro Update: Thank you all for your kind and quick responses! I installed Void and antiX and cruised around in them a little. I ended up defaulting back to Artix in the end. The hardware issues with the NIC seem to have gotten resolved. Whatever toxicity and bigotry is present among their larger demographic, I’m going to spread as much light and love as possible. I mean, to each their own, but when I was learning Japanese, I did just that: I immersed myself into the language with as many senses (?) as possible. Reading, writing, listening, imitating (called "shadowing"), literally talking to myself, plastering my walls with glossary and example sentences, forcing myself to read them out loud every time I would pass by one of the words or sentences hanging from my walls. Right until I realized that I had hit a barrier that could only be overcome...

I'm 37. Oldest: maybe a 40? Youngest: maybe 25? Just by the looks, I could go far younger, but I don't want to have to go through the whole becoming an adult shenanigans again, and I wouldn't want to have to babysit an insecure person, whose insecurity stems from their lack of experience - important distinction, because some people have *some* insecure traits (myself included)!!!
