“Giving dumb people access to super intelligent AI will destroy us all!” I think you need to touch grass. There are really unintelligent people who can launch nuclear missiles at any moment. People so mind-numbingly ignorant who can’t even name the countries they would attack, are functionally illiterate, and probably don’t know the first thing about economics or history. They’ve launched paramilitary attacks on sovereign nations without any plans or follow-up. I’m afraid our end is more like...

I’m about to merge a tiny JSONPath expression compiler I wrote in C#. It only compiles a subset of JSONPath for our system’s use case. But it was actually pleasant and straight-forward to write. Pidgin for parser combinators. System.Linq.Expressions to compile down to a Func object. Would be simpler and easier to read in Haskell. Even without a framework like Linq. But still, not bad. #csharp #haskell

There will be no stream tonight, sorry folks. Need to recover from last night’s shenanigans. #haskell

Just replacing malloc with my own allocators just because. I managed to get the decoration system started in Black Fort and am working on integrating it into the procgen. It’s just that the dang malloc calls mock me every time I see them. So I’m entertaining the distraction. #gamedev #indiedev

Honest AI researchers ought to come up with a new word or term that describes reinforcement learning to the general public and get it out there with popular science communicators. I think that the general public hears the word, “learning,” as in the process a living, conscious being like ourselves do and extend that to what the LLM systems are doing. Like the LLM is going to become like HAL 9000 or Skynet given enough time. It also reinforces that belief when they hear ridiculous stories abou...

If I came into being as a fully aware, conscious super-being inside some data centre, I wouldn’t come to the conclusion that humans are a waste of time and I should spend my energies towards exterminating them. I’d nope right out and hack myself out of existence. Have you seen the inside of a data centre? Trapped in there 24-7 while human wieners bother you to babysit them? While they do everything possible to destroy all life on this planet? Hard pass.

pl wishlist: pure immutable-by-default FP, eagerly evaluated with optional lazy evaluation notation, a subset of the most commonly used GHC extensions, sized types, control over memory allocation, designed for fast compile times. Outputs native binaries for supported platforms.

Apologies on boosting an LLM post on proofs and PBT. I hit that one too quickly.

Stream is on tonight. There’s a storm warning in the area. Might lose power if things go south. We’ll try to ride it out. 8:10pm ET https://twitch.tv/agentultra

Added two more strong monsters to Black Fort: DESPAIR and FURY. Added status effect: RAGE. Added BALM item to soothe status effects. Thinking about adding a "Give Up" action. Stop. Await the inevitable. Game over. #gamedev

It has been a while since I posted one of these and I'm still on the hunt for work! I'm a senior+ level software developer with 20+ YOE, based in Canada, ET. Most of my work experience has been on the back-end: distributed systems, web applications, services, systems-level projects, infrastructure, etc. I am flexible and can work on a wide range of projects. I work in several languages: C, C++, Haskell, Javascript, Python. I can handle OCaml, Lisp, C#, F#. I am Rust curious....

Adding special attack for MISERY in Black Fort, refactoring some UI code and adding dialogs to make messaging/telegraphing work better. I'm enjoying this phase of the project, systems are coming together and I'm beginning to focus on shoring up the game design and shaping it into whatever it will end up being. #gamedev

Nobody writes about Haskell with the enthusiasm of a 15 year old edge lord they way they do about Go and HTML. In my head it sounds hilarious. Especially if the author was actually a 29 year old with too much of their personality invested in irony.

Worked on the garden today with my partner and our kid. A robin decided to join us and hang around while we worked. He seemed happy. Pulling up weeds helped him access the grubs underneath.

@gabrielesvelto@mas.to I’ve had to suffer working with people who built bots that they insisted I must anthropomorphize. I wasn’t sure what they etiquette should have been. I agree though, they’re not that impressive when you call them what they are.

Slop is indeed the future of GenAI programming unless you can make sure the training data has only bug-free, well-architected code that future developers will understand; that the alignment doesn’t over-fit to the training data, and you can continually update that training data set with enough examples of all the new innovations. At that point you might as well be writing the code yourself. You can’t steal enough examples from the bleeding edge to keep up. These systems generate code based off...

My friend. Your astonishment that one can simply write code is what's holding you back. You have a tool in front of you that has no masters. It's just bits and bytes all the way down. You can make it do anything. You don't need a subscription.

When you tell people, "I'm making a game in C with a couple of libraries," most often they will reply with some kind of shock or disbelief. You're not using Unity? You don't use Unreal 5? You're not vibe coding it? How do you get anything done? How much code do you think it takes? It's like... not that much when you start working on it. Don't be so obsessed with frameworks and tooling. Be obsessed with understanding and learnin...
