#Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain because they relate to #feminism The theatre was told that “any mention of civil rights, feminism or social reform [topics that are central to Woolf’s work] are usually classified as ‘social topics’ by our automatic system” and are filtered out. To resolve the situation, Meta recommended removing “key words” so that the text doesn’t appear to encourage activism. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/sep/21/meta-ban-virginia-woolf-a-room-o...

In light of the UK government's recent advice to households to stock up on food and water in anticipation of potential interruption of supplies this winter, I thought I'd do a little thread on #DisasterPrep for people who aren't gun-obsessed misanthropes as someone who has managed water and sanitation for a few ecological fieldwork and bushcraft camps. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/sep/03/angela-eagle-uk-stock-up-supplies-el-nino-warning 1/🧵 #ClimateBreakdown

'Lessons learned' over LGBT youth event at #Exeter Library - BBC News This is incredibly sad and I suspect the "lesson learned" was that #SexEducation stalls are more effort than they're worth for public services. There's obviously a massive amount of #homophobia behind this, but given the Epstein revelations I am now deeply suspicious of any politicians who don't want young people educated enough about sex to potentially know what's being done to them. https:...

RE: https://social.coop/@afewbugs/116843262333036534 Please folks, I know awful things are happening in Palestine but sharing un cw'd images of dead bloodied children is not the way to raise awareness. I'm going the make this personal because I don't think some people understand in the abstract. I have PTSD, after witnessing an accident in which a small child was badly injured. Seeing that unexpectedly has given me flashbacks and made me feel sick, exhused and dissociating. This wi...

Absolute carnage in Tesco this morning, most of the chiller cabinets seem to have failed in the heat so they're selling off everything they can half price. I just popped in to grab something for lunch but ended up grabbing a lot of discounted fresh produce and deli bits. I won this morning but in the long term we're all going to be the losers. #UKHeatwave #ClimateDiary #FoodSecurity

I'm honestly a bit surprised at how much outrage this study is causing, I thought we'd pretty much accepted by now that sometimes it's hard to balance different harms against one another. More intensive farming uses fewer resources but is worse for animal welfare. Cotton takes loads of water and pesticides to grow but doesn't release microplastics when you wash it. We have this problem with sterilising contaminated wastewater in the lab, do we autoclave it, suing huge amounts of...

This is me in front of #JodrellBank's #LovellTelescope back in 2018. As far as I'm concerned the best thing we have ever managed to do as a species is to cooperate to do remarkably clever things none of us could manage alone, in the service of understanding more about the universe we find ourselves in. The fact we seem to be turning away from that as a culture and deciding the highest, most noble goal we could be persuing as a species is money making is heartbreaking. https://www.bbc.co...

THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE is everything wrong with the government understanding of the purpose of science. "Burnham’s team have asked officials to draw up plans to abolish the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) as part of a wider Whitehall shake-up. The proposals in relation to the DSIT would hand over much of science and technology policy to a more powerful business department, to be led by the chief whip, Jonathan Reynolds." https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20...
