@tante@tldr.nettime.org It ain't democracy, it's dictatorship. A sloptator (wait that sounds delicious...) Democracy is a visibly collective effort. Everyone has to participate for it to really work. That's the opposite of what AI does, AI absorbs that collective effort and spits it out as its own individual achievement. Like a dictator or a CEO claiming credit for the entire country or company.

@beep@follow.ethanmarcotte.com I think this is still WAY too optimistic about AI, but I guess what would you expect from an article written by managers who see humans as infinitely interchangeable and replaceable resources... The problem is way more than burnout. It's shiting roles to people who complete the work faster *because* they don't have the training or experience to know if it's actually done well. So they don't do it well, they only do it fast. Designers start vibe cod...

@benroyce@mastodon.social @PizzaDemon@mastodon.online @infobeautiful@vis.social @ourworldindata@vis.social Same argument could be made for the other diseases listed too. How much heart disease is caused by corporations insisting on a "right" to push cheap, addictive, harmful foods? Or by insurance companies refusing to pay for preventative care? How much of that cancer is caused by the obscene profits made by dumping carcinogens into our environment? How many of those strokes are...act...

@csara@vmst.io I've been using Hetzner, they've been great and cheaper than the cheap US-based place I was using earlier.

@rabbit I would love a "web of trust" style system too...wouldn't necessarily require people to produce explicit blocklists so it'd give more lists with less effort, although you do lose some specificity that way...could potentially use notes attached to those blocks to get a bit of both though! I did a pretty basic prototype of the idea a while back...was kinda hoping someone with more time for it would pick up the idea and run with it but no luck so far :) ht...

Ughhh Car won't start, so called insurance for a tow. They send me GPS tracking of the truck and I watch him driving up the highway...past my exit...into the next state. After about half an hour I hit the "call driver" button and...nothing happens. So I call the insurance company back, they put me on hold, they also can't reach the driver, and now I'm waiting on them to get a supervisor. So my week is starting off *great* Maybe he picked up a Porsche...

@Njord As the guy who often gets roped into "fixing" (deleting and rewriting) the LLM slop of my coworkers...definitely worse than useless.

@jonathanhogg There's also the duplicated effort problem. Pick any large company...McDonald's for example. I'm sure they've got a bunch of coders building their app and their website and controlling the POS or whatever other gadgets in the stores. And Burger King probably has a very similar team writing very similar code. And Wendy's, and Jack in the Box, and on and on and on. If you've got two competing factories that each produce a hundred cars...

@aj I'm less sure that would work on its own. All of the corporate enshittified networks they already use started out that way too. To make those points I think you have to focus on the community side. Shit like @FediPact -- I've got the stats somewhere but off the top of my head I think it was something like 30% of servers had Meta blocked before they'd really even *tried* to join, just from the announcement that they might. The fact that, unlike corporate networks where they do wh...
