One possible silver lining of Debian voting to open the floodgates to AI-coded apps: their habit of being 18 months behind the current version of things means that by the time most vibe-coded slop apps make it to candidate status, they will have long been abandoned, as the “developer” moved on to the next dopamine hit.

A French long-distance bus operator is shutting down due to soaring fuel prices making its operations unprofitable: https://londonreconnections.com/french-coach-service-shutting-down-partly-due-to-high-fuel-costs-voyages-daffaires/ meanwhile, in the UK, they’re still holding off on electrifying diesel railways, because it’s “too expensive”. To say nothing of Australia, where the idea of running electric trains outside of state capital cities is regarded as lunacy. India, meanwhile, electrifi...

RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@johncarlosbaez/116639735715829891 In Australia, IIRC, Eora/Sydney has one or two canals, built too late to compete against rail. Not sure if any of them have locks. Naarm/Melbourne has one in the bayside suburb of Elwood, though it’s a short, stubby affair that never became long enough to be a transport artery.

The first of 79 huge concrete segments for a road/rail tunnel under the Baltic between Germany and Denmark is currently being lowered into position in an underwater trench: https://www.railwaygazette.com/germany/2026/05/07/immersion-operation-underway-for-german-danish-fehmarn-belt-tunnel/ The segment weighs 73,500 tonnes. The Fehmarn Belt Tunnel is scheduled to be complete by 2029, though this may be delayed. Once it’s running, it will cut the rail journey time between Hamburg and Copenhag...

This is nifty: Klattsch, an old-school formant-based speech synthesiser (think SAM or DECTalk) implemented in Javascript. It can also sing. https://tgies.github.io/klattsch/

Slightly disappointed to see that the Greens didn’t manage to win Islington, my last municipality in London. Though good on them for winning Hackney (where I briefly lived some time before that).

RE: https://mastodon.social/@fesshole/116523585121494172 One oversight notwithstanding, that was a good idea: unless, for some reason, the word “lederhosen” is meant to appear in the project, it would have been way to search for and replace before going to production. Of course, one has to remember to actually do this.

Just finished reading this book. It was quite interesting, and joined the dots in my understanding. A few takeaways: continental modernism only really arrived in the early 1930s, the explosion of “stockbrokers’ Tudor” originated in the Arts & Crafts movement but got picked up by speculative property developers pandering to sentiment, Swedish modern design was more influential in the 20s UK than I thought, and “art deco” is like “techno” in music: used to describe a lot of things that ar...

Architectural heritage campaigners in the UK are calling for the Grade II listing of the building above Charing Cross Station in London; that’s it in the picture: If successful, the 1989 building could be the first Postmodernist building to gain heritage protection in the UK. Only recently did Brutalist architecture (such as Southbank) start being listed, and I can imagine some will spit out their tea upon hearing the news. (King Charles, for one, will not be amused.) https://londonist.com/lon...

A professor at a French teachers’ college came up with a scheme to boost his career: inventing a Nobel-style medal in his field and staging annual ceremonies, awarding the medal to a number of esteemed elderly academics including Noam Chomsky, as well as himself. The scam got him a promotion, a pay rise, and possibly a 5-year prison sentence, depending on what charges prosecutors decide they can press: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/07/french-professor-florent-montaclair-accused-awa...
