Okay, yeah, it's suddenly cooler out. Fall weather, definitely. But chick, I think you might be overdoing it with your knit toque and scarf. It's 15°C, not 5.

The library's got nothing. The bookstore (physical)'s got nothing. The bookstore (online)'s only got very expensive or entirely useless books. I even tried Amazon, which is how I ended up with this piece of garbage that's just printed PowerPoint slides. Can anyone recommend some free online learning resources for coding/programming? I want to learn Pascal. #coding #programming #courses #pascal #compsci

I've gotten used to the idea of messing up my back in my sleep. Roll over into a bad position, stay there for a couple of hours, easy. I don't like it, but at least I understand it. But today I woke up fine. But by the time I left for work an hour later, my lower back on one side was a little tight. It's just gotten worse and worse through the day. Pills aren't helping. Heat isn't helping. No comfortable position to sit. This sucks. And I still don't know what I did to...

Hey @crispius, there's a term on the tip of my tongue that's just not coming to me, and I bet you know what I'm thinking of. IIRC, you take an old PC or something, you set it up in a certain way, and you put it between your home WiFi and your ISP connection. Increase privacy, strip out ads, that kind of stuff. Or maybe it's done with a Raspberry Pi? What am I thinking of?

My cable/internet company knows about my thermostat, by brand name. I don't recall connecting it to our wifi. I specifically told the guy installing it that I didn't want that. The only stated purpose of it being connected to the wifi is for us to put apps on our phone to change the temperature away from the wall. We've never installed those apps, we don't want them. So what data is being sent that my ISP knows about my thermostat, and where is it being sent? They named several...

Dear American Conservatives. If Canada *could* intentionally--or through deliberate neglect--send massive amounts of forest fire smoke to assault the United States, heedless of that desperately important international border (which, on other days, you call "just a random line on a map"), we would have done it before now. We'd have sent it straight to Washington DC.

My wife works for a bank, one of the "big" Canadian banks. She mentioned to me today that they have a new thing going, where they want you (as an employee) to wear a thing, because they've partnered with a fitness company/app and they'll measure your heart rate, etc etc. No one was using it, so they started saying "please use it, we'll give you points toward that thing we do where you can earn *stuff*". She hadn't even finished her story, and I jumped in sa...

Got in a short walk before the heat sets in right later. Hot, but not unbearable. The humidity hasn't arrived yet, but there's no breeze at all. Not bad in the shade. Met Mike and his dog Bear. At least, I think it was Mike. I'm sure about Bear. Mike and I naturally fell into a rhythm walking together, talking old guy stuff. Arthritis, bad back, getting enough water, minor surgeries, that sort of thing. I only aimed for a short stroll and back, so I wasn't pushing at all. But...

Why was blue ink such a big thing in the--I don't know, '70s '80s '90s? Almost every pen you encountered anywhere during those years was a blue pen. Now, almost every pen is black. Was it a matter of the cost of ingredients? Fashion trend?

I have resisted for so long trying to make a grilled cheese sandwich with mayonnaise instead of butter on the bread. I've had it suggested many times, I've seen pro chefs do it, but it still felt wrong. And that's to someone who often uses mayo instead of butter on a regular sandwich. But I've finally tried it. The flavour is almost exactly the same to me, and the simplicity was worth it. I think Chef Frank Proto's "medium-low" is higher than my "medium-low&q...

What does it mean when a company says an OS or software suite is an "enterprise" solution, an "enterprise OS", etc? I've seen it so many times it's lost all meaning. Is it just that it's intended for business customers?

I'm seeing basically nothing of #RedDressDay in my feed, which surprises me. Women, girls, 2-Spirit and other individuals from Indigenous nations still disappear or turn up murdered *far* more than any other group in Canada. Much remains to be done, and even knowing about the problem is low-bar Step One. #mmiwg #mmiwg2s

The classics (those which were the classics during my generation) are disappearing. I remember being intrigued by Gateway by Frederik Pohl when I picked up a cheap used copy decades ago. I don't remember much beyond the concept, though; I don't think I ever finished it. So I go to my library website, figuring I should be able to check out an e-book copy of it easily and start reading it again today. Nope, nothing there. I go further out into the larger catalogue--no problem if I have t...

Moss absolutely *thrives* in the cracks in my driveway. I like moss. I would like moss to grow indoors like a houseplant. Any time I try, the moss dies. Perhaps it's me. Perhaps it doesn't like me. If I spent more time outside, the moss out there would probably die. Maybe other things, too, because I can't get a tree to grow inside, either. It may very well be that, by mostly staying indoors, I am single-handedly saving the planet. You're welcome.
