i borrowed a VR set from a friend so that i can finally complete HL:A (it's been a few years since i last played, so i'm restarting from scratch). and god, it's so good! so fun to play around with items and the environment. This is one of these experiences that really makes me feel and value the human creativity and soul that went into all of it

i'm a keyboard+mouse person but frequently throughout the day i lean towards keyboard-only workflows (too lazy to reach for the mouse). so for years I had SurfingKeys in Firefox for the occasional "click link without mouse". but lately i found some web apps like mastodon to have good built-in keynav, and found myself disabling SurfingKeys to avoid conflicts. these vim extensions are always a balancing act (annoying to reach for mouse vs. annoying when website hotkeys g...

Btw my GUADEC 2026 talk has been accepted! It's titled "Performance profiling Mutter, GNOME Shell & apps with Tracy". I'll show you (the developers) how to use Tracy [1] for diagnosing performance problems in your GNOME apps and system components, along with examples from the work I did for the GNOME STF. Now let's hope I get the Spanish visa and can come in-person :blobcat: [1]: https://github.com/wolfpld/tracy #GNOME #GUADEC #GUADEC2026

why did they call it "do not disturb mode" instead of just making it the default, with a "disturb mode" that you have to enable if needed

Almost done adding touchpad gesture support to Smithay! Here you can see the pinch zoom/rotate gesture visually in gtk4-demo, then the swipe gesture only in WAYLAND_DEBUG on the right, then the hold gesture by stopping the kinetic scrolling by putting a finger on the touchpad.

Our group went all across and around the Olkhon Island, and we even got to do some ice skating on a smooth part of the lake. In these months the ice is thick enough for cars to drive on, so that's the main mode of transport. The drivers can be pretty crazy there, our guide told us some of them go upwards of 100 km/h on ice lol, that sounds very dangerous. But we also traveled on airboats a few times -- also a fairly unique experience. 2/2 #travel #baikal

Apparently Wayland Firefox uses a subsurface for the right click menu pop-up right until it wouldn't fit in the window, at which point it starts properly using xdg-popup for the right click menu pop-up regardless of where you open it??????????????

Just pushed new versions of Video Trimmer and Identity! VT now prefills the trim timestamps into the output filename, reducing conflicts when trimming multiple sections from a video. Identity sports a new time hover display on the seek bar, hotkeys for integer zoom increments, and the filename shown in window title. Both apps also got CLI flags to set their starting options. Find them on Flathub: - https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.gitlab.YaLTeR.VideoTrimmer - https://flathub.org/en/apps...

Huh, why does the new Electron Wayland blog post mention that on Wayland windows cannot resize at any time? This is like one of the main Wayland differences -- a Wayland window is *always* in control of its size, unlike X11. The compositor can only ask it to resize, but the window always has the final say https://www.electronjs.org/blog/tech-talk-wayland

So I guess I'm part of the 21:9 club now! Really enjoying this form factor. Plenty more space, but the Overview hot corner is still comfortable to reach. Ended up getting a 37.5" 3840x1600@144 LG IPS. At 110 PPI it's slightly above my comfort zone (I sit 80+ cm from my screen), but so far it's been fine. Only a few websites where I get the urge to zoom in. I must say, scrollable tiling works really well with a 21:9. I've heard it from niri users plenty...

I've been doing some small features in Identity in preparation for the GNOME 50 update (not much time for apps so I usually update them when a new GNOME releases). This one is curious: a hover popup that shows exactly where the video will seek when you click on the bar. Looks simple, but unfortunately needed plenty of hacks since GTK doesn't currently expose some necessary API. Note how the time always matches, including to the very left and very right of the time slider. #GNO...
