  It's economically inefficient. The true cost of transport should be naturally priced into the good or service, rather than artificially externalized. Supply-side subsidy by the government like this leads to higher-than-optimal use, which is the definition of deadweight loss. It costs us more to do things this way.   Also weird: Those of us who said back when it was formed that the name, "Homeland Security," wasn't just fascist-_sounding_, and maybe telegraphed the real intent, were somehow correct. Broken clocks, I guess.

  Kind of meta, but does anybody remember garage door openers back in the day? My family had one for which the "security" consisted of an 8-bit "key," as in, the remote had 8 jumpers, and the lift unit had 8 DIP switches. You'd cut jumpers in a certain pattern, and flip the switches to match. What was fun was seeing how many garage doors around town we could open using the default pattern. Smart locks have got to be at least a slight improvent, right?

  Absolutely, and the headline here isn’t (e: whoops) that extreme wealth inequality is not the result of human nature, greed, or anything. It’s actually an emergent mathematical property of the system itself. It’s unavoidable, even if everybody acts honorably. Proof by physicists that capitalism is wack.
