I just finished #Pluribus and found it a very thoughtful exploration of humanity, loneliness, love, and individualism vs a collective hive mind. The series asks its audience to consider questions in ways I rarely experience at a time when so many programs feel like more of the same. I recommend watching and am interested to hear what others think.

It was an honor to join leaders from across the U.S. for the inaugural National Summit of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum in Washington, D.C. I’m proud to serve as a Michigan Ambassador & be part of this extraordinary effort celebrating women’s stories & contributions to our nation’s history.

About a year ago I finished a book proposal about how our political institutions are not equipped for 21st century technological disruption. It still sits in my laptop. Feels timely. #AI #uspol

Before 1993, women weren’t allowed to wear pants on the Senate floor. That changed when Sen. Moseley Braun (D-IL), & Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) wore trousers - shocking the male-dominated Senate. This eventually led to the dress code being clarified to allow women to wear pants. I finally went to see #TheOdyssey & was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I majored in Classics & my expectations were low given I still haven't forgiven Hollywood for Troy. Did it follow the poem perfectly? No. Did it capture every nuance & theme? Of course not. But what Nolan's film did magnificently manage to do is include so many events & ideas in Homer's epic in a single film, which is no small feat. The themes feel v timely in 2026 w/o being preachy. I highly...

This is my final week at Michigan State University where I worked at the intersection of science, storytelling, policy, and public service. Somehow, no one said “no” to my wild ideas and that freedom allowed me to grow in ways I never expected, both as a scholar and as a person. I will always be grateful. Happily, I am not going too far and will remain part of the Spartan community as an adjunct faculty member. And as for what’s next… I’m excited to share more very soon!

About 250M years ago, 90% of species on Earth died during the Permian extinction. All of that loss created a lot of vacant niches to fill.
Not long after, the first mammals, our ancestors, appeared.
Life on this pale blue dot will be resilient - whether we’re part of it or not.

I visited the pitch drop experiment at The University of Queensland today. Started in 1927, it’s the world’s longest-running lab experiment. Pitch is a highly viscous liquid that appears solid & shatters at room temperature, but continues to “drop” every decade or so. https://smp.uq.edu.au/pitch-drop-experiment

I don’t usually follow celebrity news, but Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce are doing things right. This week (leading up to their wedding) they have donated $26 million to food banks & community centers, hospitals for children, animal rescues & shelters & educational programs.

Folks who know I love reading tend to tell me how many #books they read last year. But that’s not what I’m particularly interested in. I want to know what you learned through those stories. How they shaped your perspective. What they taught you about our world. Perhaps what you discovered about yourself. ✨ To me, that’s what’s most beautiful about a good book. 📚

In recent years, we became too comfortable letting #Twitter define journalism & media. Algorithms often dictated the narratives we collectively paid attention to. Absurd trends were covered by news outlets & ballooned into major stories while we missed so much real substance. And the quick takes of uninformed politicians & bad actors were forced upon anyone participating in the network. It was bad for democracy. The #Mastodon model makes me hopeful we can do better. #tw...

“I've always tried to present a positive view of the world in my work. It's so much easier to be negative & cynical & predict doom for the world than it is to try & figure out how to make things better. We have an obligation to do the latter." - Jim Henson
