Some big personal news today: the second edition of my book, Developing Inclusive Mobile Apps, is now available! When I wrote the first edition, SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose were just beginning to emerge. Since then, mobile development—and accessibility—has changed enormously, so it felt like the right time for a major update.

The bar I was at last night was playing American Cricket on the tv. And I have some questions: 1. Does Walgreens have their own American Cricket team? 2. Most of the time, the bowler just bowled, the wicket keeper caught the ball, and nothing happened. What’s going on there? 3. I thought the point was to score runs by running between bases. But there didn’t seem to be much of that going on.

Include people with disabilities in your work. Employ them, listen to them, work with them. People with disabilities are still people. People who want the same things anyone else does. This is the kind of thing that should be implicit, but for some reason it still needs to be said. Don’t build *for* people with disabilities and then expect them to be grateful for how awesome you are.

When used thoughtfully, hiding buttons from assistive technology users can make your app easier to understand and quicker to navigate. Custom Accessibility Actions expose that functionality for VoiceOver, Voice Control, and Switch Control users, without the navigation noise. I was reminded of the band Bearsuit this week and have been absolutely loving it. If you enjoy early 2000s noisy DIY indie pop, and judging by the numbers they get on Spotify - you don’t, then this is the band for you. https://open.spotify.com/artist/2p7b58GewtdBTYCJmg9gJ8

Everyone: Paedophiles are the worst of the worst. Especially the rich and powerful ones. Every lurid detail about them should be public so we can judge them thoroughly and harshly. Also everyone: Wow! A hagiography about a rich and powerful paedophile, I must reward their behaviour with money. I feel like I’m going absolutely mad here. Someone make it make sense please. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crl1lpzp4z5o

I’ve been watching The Assembly. It’s a celebrity interview show, but a group interview by ND and intellectually disabled people. I can’t recommend it enough - a rollercoaster from personal and powerful to incredibly fun. The episode I just watched went from a question about eating disorders to “What’s the name of your dentist?” I can’t watch more than one episode a day because it’s just too much emotionally. ITV in the uk, but some other countries have their own version. https://www.itv.com/wat...

"SwiftUI is accessible by default" is one of the most repeated misconceptions in iOS development. I've heard it in conference talks, accessibility reports, and job interviews. It's not true. First post on Mobile A11y in 4 years. Felt like a good one to come back with. Hope you enjoy it. https://mobilea11y.com/blog/swiftui-not-accessible/ #Accessibility #a11y #MobileA11y #SwiftUI #swiftlang #swift #iOS #iosdev

RE: https://iosdev.space/@RobW/116262797528209243 This offer is still open: If you have any questions at all about mobile accessibility - no matter how complex or straightforward - and you don’t mind me writing about it, feel free to ask me.

SwiftUI previews offer a fast, practical way to see the output of our view code. But did you know you can also use them to check accessibility-related UI changes including Dynamic Type, localisation, and system accessibility settings, all without needing a physical device. https://mobilea11y.com/blog/swiftui-preview-testing/ #accessibility #a11y #ios #iosdevelopment #swiftui

Unpopular opinion: flowers smell absolutely rank and the fact that people want their homes to smell of that is mind blowing. If I put the decomposing corpse of a fox in my lounge because I wanted everything to smell of its jizz I would rightly be sectioned. Yet i can buy decapitated plant sexual organs at Asda.
