Google/Alphabet is flat-out determined to make EVERYBODY pay them a monthly fee for storage. They've announced plans to count all Android backup data against your Google cloud storage. When that happens, what are the odds that millions of people will suddenly find themselves out of storage? And don't forget, once you're out of data space you will no longer be able to receive email. Probably no longer be able to text. Hell, you might not even be able to browse the web anymore, assum...

I was driving in an unfamiliar area today, when I passed a giant bookstore. The sign on the front said it had 100,000 used books, every one of them $3 each. And blu-rays and DVDs, too. I'd have pulled right in if it didn't look closed. Looked it up when I got home. Permanently closed as of 2 weeks ago. I must grieve now. #books #Bookstodon

Quasit's Book Recommendations: "Shōgun" (1975) by James Clavell When I was in my early teens my father had a fairly serious heart attack. He survived, thank goodness, and lived well past 90 years old. But while he was bedridden and convalescing, our neighbors brought all sorts of books over to help him pass the time. They were mostly best-sellers of the time; books that I would never have read on my own, since I was a science-fiction fan. "Shōgun" wa...

Speaking of book recommendations: if anyone would like a personalized book recommendation, please feel free to ask! I've probably read more books, particularly older books, than 99% of the human race. And my memory for books is unusually good. So I'd be glad to make a recommendation for anyone who needs one. Now, I •will• note that I haven't read that many books that were published after the year 2000 or so. I've read some, and I'm trying to read more, but just not that man...

I need a hashtag. Can anyone help? I need a hashtag for comments on posts by people who are supporting the DNC, either intentionally or as useful idiots. We're seeing more and more people who are actually claiming that the Democrats will make everything "normal" again, and reminding us that Obama and Biden and Kamala Harris were SO much more "moral and respectable" than that crude and foul-mouthed Trump. Somehow they are completely oblivious to the f...

Quasit's Book Recommendations: “The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 1 (1929 - 1964)” (1970), edited by Robert Silverberg When I was a fairly young child (maybe seven years old), my father brought me a book from the library. That book changed my life. It was a collection of some of the greatest short stories from science fiction's Golden Age, as selected by vote among the members of the Science Fiction Writers of America. The time frame for those stories was 1929 to 1964—i...

Here's something I've been looking forward to: the first free ebook recommendation. H.G. Wells was not only a founding figure in the creation of the genre of science fiction; he created plots which have continued to define the genre to this day. "The War of the Worlds", "The Time Machine", "The Invisible Man", "The Island of Doctor Moreau" are just a •few• of Wells' genre-defining novels. Which make...

Trump's image of himself as Doctor Jesus reminds me of Emperor Caligula's revelation of his divinity in Robert Graves' "I, Claudius". So Trump will appear one day on nationwide TV, every channel, bedecked in his white robe and red mantle, and declare his Divinity. He will be Donald Jesus Trump, God of Gods and King of Kings. And Trumpianity will be the official religion of America by executive order.

@alissaazar I noticed the piece doesn't mention whether the officials in question were Republicans or Democrats. Given that it's Portland, I'll bet that it's Democrats. They are just as much fascists as the Republicans are. Don't forget that.

Here's the problem: To even turn things back to the way they were 20 years ago would take a President as ruthless and unchallenged as Trump himself. Or a President, House, Senate, SCOTUS and Federal judiciary that would be completely behind that level of reform. Plus a ruthless purging of all the apparatchiks that Trump and his team have ensconced throughout the federal bureaucracy. Tell me truthfully, do you believe that that will ever happen? Is there any doubt in your mind that if...
