RE: https://mastodon.online/@Pepijn/115021948428162829 It's been a year and even now not a duck goes by without me thinking "huh, you could be in IT mate!" It's nice to connect with nature.

I'm on the server floor of a "highly secure data center with 24/7/365 surveillance, direct access control and robust perimeter security". An actual duck just walked by. 🦆 The panic is absolutely glorious. I think this just became one of the highlights of my life.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARG DANES! To make the Hobbit a more effective worker I figured their High-Viz vest should not be a dress*... Trying to buy stuff locally I asked our local FB group of locals & foreigners for advice on børne high-viz. Within minutes I received two condescending replies from Danes explaining how "here in Denmark" we "don't just do this" and instead "ask the community to do so or at least get proper permits first."...

Offer for people living somewhere in the middle of the Netherlands: At work we have two industrial Adler sewing machines ready to go to scrap. They were near a fire and are heavily corroded. Machines are free for pickup but need complete dismantling and repainting. You'll need to disassemble it, remove & neutralize corrosion, fix and reassemble it. This is days of work. I will also get one and will share restoration tips. The attached stock photo is of a similar one in good state. #...

As there's now a good, almost direct, train connection between Lagos in Portugal and Kemi in Finland I'm wondering about the finances of owning a house in each place and migrating with the seasons. 39k euro in Kemi gets you a lovely well maintained house from the mid 1990s. 120k euro near (!) Lagos gets you a block of half-painted concrete with holes on all six sides (yes, that includes the roof and shared wall with the neighbours). So that's a no. edit: check @jon@gruene.social&...

Hurrah! On our way to Sweden from Helsingør to Helsingör (or something like that ;-) 🙂 (video shows the car deck door Herald-of-Free-Enterprise-ing its way close as we depart). It's a full electric ferry. Kinda cool :-)

On articles about #meta #smartglasses often "aaactually" style comments appear stating they are not so different from how photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson operated. Henri used one unconnected camera. Between an event & sharing it with the "world" existed a delaying proces of reflection. Smart glasses are just one component of a near realtime data harvesting, matching & sharing machine. The only thing they have in common with Henri is a physical lens. What pe...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@larstransportworld/116985085964903563 Apparently some people disagree but this is a DSB thing that I absolutely love. Four train sets combined in one. Years ago I had an absolute blast listening to two retired interrailing Irish women retelling how they first sat in the Struer section, then moved to the Aarhus section "just in time" only to realise later that Aarhus and Aalborg are not the same thing. I got to put the cherry on top for them by explainin...

#Russia: I've seen people wondering what Wildberries & Ozone are. They're similar to Amazon in that they're both retailer & marketplace. Anyone can buy there, anyone can sell. Delivery is mostly in-store. They work with a ~100.000 pickup points where people can also test or try the items. They sell anything from Purina dogfood (WTF #nestle) or military body armour. Like Amazon you can share reviews, showing for example your armour while standing in front of your owl colle...

Any #EU law experts here? As today the #USA administration use dishonest claims about forced labour to justify import taxes I wonder how the EU Forced Labour Regulation** will affect imports from the US. Will we see certain manufacturers or entire produce groups (as produce is pooled from different sources and the US government does not enforce its laws) blocked? https://www.aspeninstitute.org/blog-posts/essential-workers-exploited-labor-perspectives-on-farm-work-in-the-us/ **https://single...

One of the nicest things of using a bike as our main mode of transport is how easy it is to get by without much planning. Picking up kid from daycare, passing by a new cafe. Looks nice. Let's have a drink. Rock the bikes up to the outside seating and Go For Drink! Toddler (in good mood today as it's not too warm) is zooming around on their trike.

RE: https://mastodon.online/@Pepijn/116953202963631002 I'm into model trains. It's a hobby that attracts people who like to explore. If for some individuals tinkering with LLM fits into that I kinda get their interest. Over the last half year small companies and hobbyist alike started blatantly sharing LLM generated images though. And it truly puzzles me: in a hobby based around physically modelling a small version of the real world, what's the point?!? Is your hobby being contami...

These days Danish DSB is all Serious and Professional with their branding. Large red walls with some basic functional black and white. With the new Talgo and IC5 their look suggests they might very well be temporary stock trains from a DB lease pool. How different was it until the late 1990s when domestic sleeper service was still a thing and equipment was to have a little bit of fun in their identity.

20yr old me would be ashamed but here we are: I'm celebrating a laundry bucket. Quick review of the LIVARNO 452900 (purchased for 50 danish kroner at LIDL). With a capacity of 40L and rated at a solid 12kg this is one beast of a laundry bucket. Constructed from low-density polyethylene it's designed to warp and flex even in difficult situations. The three separately molded anti-slip handles are a joy to operate. 5/5 stars for now. 2026 update: Nope. Handles randomly snapped. Zero...

The biggest difficulty I find in interacting with other humans about the AI /LLM chatboxes is how so many struggle to accept these things are often confidently wrong. By accident I just pasted the URL of our domain (https://leslunesdejupiter.eu)in the Google search box instead of the address bar and an AI summary appeared. Nothing of this (different in Danish, French and English) is what our website is about: #ai #llm #FrustrationMachines

Apple: you should update your phone for security reasons! It's important! Also Apple: "More Storage Required - This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 23,96 GB of available storage during installation." My phone only has 64 GB. 26 GB of that is currently used for the OS and whatever system data is. So that leaves 14 GB for everything else.. 💩 #phone #apple

Ffs & wtf. I'm in the library with the toddler. Another parent has been swiping away on her ipad and asking her utterly disinterested kid for their opinion. Curiosity got the best of me and I asked. She just ordered 20 different toddler outfits from Shein (massive unregulated shit-'clothes' retailer). She marvelled on how cheap it is* and how she'll usually just throws away whatever is broken or arrival, doesn't fit or doesn't look nice. *foreigner in Billund. She...

#Billund area tourism tip: the little trainstation at #Bindeballe is renovated and is now a free mini-museum. I'm especially impressed by the photo of a man with a glorious belly that can make a bellcurve jealous. Very Obelix. Good toilets. #tourism #denmark

Maybe it's the hashtags I follow. The past months I keep on seeing fedi bots promoting terrible AI generated "learning experience" websites aimed at children. For some reason most of these sites include dodgy #LLM chat options. Often cutesy themed after animals or historical figures.* If you're a parent: are you actually ok with your still developing child being manipulated by these things? #abuse #parenting #AI #safety *Here's a Dutch one. "That's a lot of killing, and each year it gets harder." Jeffrey Lockwood is an entomologist whose methods kill billions of animals. Like an insect Oppenheimer he reflects on his work. The essay is named "To Be Honest" and included in the book "Grasshopper Dreaming" (2002). They're his reflections on the quest for efficient cheap killing & the silence that follows. I sometimes reread it trying to understand how we internalize this stuff. Can't s...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/116832021297021883 The only good thing about #WSocial is @_elena@mastodon.social's reporting on it. One day #WSocial will be used in a book to illustrate the type of companies where a bunch of management types think of a product but outsource the actual work to dispassionate employees or contractors.
