It appears that old versions of perl don't like the nested map in WebKit's IDL code generator and occasionally do the wrong thing, so I get a build failure 15-20% of the time. Upstream won't want my "fix," but figuring that one out was time-consuming, so at least now I can move on to some other thing on my list of things to do.

Oh, awesome. I was going to look at matplotlib on Tumbleweed (the testsuite is failing on GNOME 50 because pygobject prints out a warning about a deprecated function, and the test treats warnings as errors), but someone already made a fix for it. GNOME 50 is hopefully on its way now.

It's a variable called endPostion, and it's referenced several times in the function. I guess someone typoed the name and just rolled with it.

Okay, I really should be trying to fix this WebKit crasher right now, rather than gaming, but one of the people I'm gaming with didn't know that The Sound of Silence was originally sung by Simon and Garfunkel. And I'd never heard of the Disturbed version that he knew.

Trying to learn to use lldb, since it seems to be the preferred debugger for WebKit. Every time I type a character, it appears to briefly print the target (or a notice saying, "no target") on the last line of the screen, then clear it. I wonder why it is doing that. I've encountered a similar issue with vim, so, a while ago, I added a thing in yasr so that it can optionally not read things printed to a certain part of the screen. So now it appears I can use that for lld...

I've had a blog post like this in my head for a while, but I saw something on here that was a good illustration that diversity matters, and DEI efforts do not result in unqualified employees being hired. https://open.substack.com/pub/mikegorse/p/dei-efforts-do-not-mean-hiring-unqualified?r=2iv03w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

I feel like Donald Tramp doesn't take anything seriously, and maybe some people like that about him, that he's not a regular politician, but some things need to be taken seriously--wars, for instance.

I'm only posting this because I find it amusing. What an email actually said: "I live in Nuremberg and you will be able to find me in the NUE office most of the time." What I thought I heard my screen reader say: "I live in Nuremberg and you will be able to find me in the new office most of the time."

Until I saw this blog post, I had no idea that anyone was considering making Linux distributions VT-less. https://xogium.me/the-next-best-decision-stepping-away-from-the-linux-desktop Now I'm wondering what is seen as the advantage of removing VTs. It would certainly affect my workflow. And what would happen if a system is unable to boot into a graphical desktop? This happened to a lot of Tumbleweed users (myself included) when updating to GNOME 49. Admittedly, it is not good that a sys...

The latest Double Tap podcast is titled "Inside Sight Village: Canes, Travel & Voting." Well, I don't have any sight at all, so I guess it isn't relevant to me.

I just wrote out some thoughts on the Linux desktop and how to make the experience better. The tl;dr version is that I'm not expecting the Linux desktop to go mainstream, although I wouldn't mind if it did, and, even if a lot of people see no reason to use Linux, they might change their mind at some point if they become unhappy with the direction that Windows or MacOS are going, so it is important for Linux to be there as an alternative. And seemingly boring things--like supporti...

I see a lot of posts on my feed expressing various ethical and pragmatic concerns about AI. And I see quite a few posts from other disabled people along the lines of "stop telling us not to use AI when it's helping me fix accessibility issues that you've never done anything to fix." I worry about the ecological effects of AI's need for resources in the aggregate, but a few disabled people making use of it isn't going to make a meaningful difference, and I get the argum...

I see "PDA" in someone's handle, and I wonder what it means. Personal data assistant? Probably not; it isn't 2005 anymore, after all. Progressive Democrats of America? Probably not that either. Pathological demand avoidance? Probably not. Public displays of affection? Maybe. Or something else?

Oh hi It's another day. I check my work email this morning, and we have 11 new bugs open for FreeRDP CVEs and two new bugs for Gimp CVEs. It isn't clear to me if I'm going to work on them or if someone in Beijing is going to work on them, but someone needs to work on them. Meanwhile, I'm trying to squeeze some API changes into at-spi2-core, and I'm already past the freeze, so I'll need to request a freeze break, so trying to get that done and feeling I'm neglecting t...

I'm noticing that, when I hear "AI," I think of a large language model, but AI can mean many things that can be very different from each other.
