Okay so I have a future #monsterdon candidate once it comes out on free streaming somewhere: "Hope" It's in theaters (or at least one of them) right now, but it probably won't be long before it's online for free somewhere. I so want to comment, but no spoilers! It's one of those terrible movies where it's obvious that everyone's having a gas making it. It's got monster, lots of gore and destruction, heroically bumbling cops who shoot lots and lots and lot...

They used a couple pictures of mine, which mostly paid for the gas I used to drive out there. I camped overnight in order to photograph a really picturesque and unusually large juniper at dawn, when the light was good at that location. The damaged section of border wall in the story is right nearby. Here's the juniper I went to photograph. Before and after. I still don't have the "after" the wall pic I want, so I'll go back. https://www.hcn.org/articles/a-new-section-of...

The violence of "closed border" policy you don't see: migrants dying in the desert. This is Pima County alone, in June, not the entire US border region or entire year. The following report comes from https://humaneborders.org The number of migrant deaths reported by the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner in June 2026 was 13. Recently found individuals grouped by PMI (Post Mortem Interval): 5 dead less than a day 5 dead less than 1 week 1 dead less than 3 weeks...

Any entomologists know what these are? Some sort of gnat-ish thingy is the best I've got. They all came out tonight and it's one huge orgy at the bug light. There are so many that it's hard to get close to take a photo since they fly into my nose and eyes. Blech. This is where I really wish I had a proper macro lens, especially since lots of these little fellers are differentiated by small details like wing venation. But maybe they're well known enough that someone can ID the...

My cannabis nursery camera/photography policy. I added the no pervert glasses sign this year. (Thanks to the fedi artist whose name I've forgotten who provided the graphic image 🙏) We haven't seen anybody wearing them and I really hope we don't have to enforce it, but we will. We actively encourage people to take pictures of the nursery and share them. And everyone seems to completely understand our policy of only photographing people with their expressed consent, but I suspect pe...

@petrillic@hachyderm.io Is that to prove that you are over 18… Or still under 18?

I think there's a lot more to this phenomenon than a quick quip. The fact that a good post can have an extended shelf life in a context that rarely produces flashy virality is a function of both the technological infrastructure and the much more human and real social norms here. This is one of those things that I meant a couple days ago when I said to newcomers that a lot of the good parts of Mastodon/fediverse take some time to notice and appreciate.

#LizardReport It's been cool the last few days since I got back, but warmed up enough today that the lizards started coming back out. Still haven't seen Bill or Donna, but Cutie, the tiger whiptail, the zebratail and the white iguana came over to get fed. While I was feeding Cutie, a big ol' bobcat strolled down the alley 30 feet away. The great horned owl, which for some reason was out during the day, hooted at the bobcat from up on its perch on the power pole. Afte...

I was like this when I got here, I swear... Oh, damn, caught in the act. Well, fine, then. Don't bother fixing it, guys, cuz next time, I'll just karate chop it off at the base with my bare hands. Who knew this is the super power I'd get after being bitten by that radioactive lizard? (I was hoping I'd turn into Godzilla, but ya take what ya can get.) #border #BorderWall #NoWall #EveryWallIsAPolicyFailure

#LizardReport Wow, lots of news here in the yard. Donna the iguana's new friend showed up today and took meal worms from my hand (pics). Such a cute little lizard! Then I saw another somewhat large iguana in the backyard. It ate mealworms that I threw to it but didn't quite know what to make of me and eventually sauntered off across the alley. Three iguanas in the yard! Funny thing is, I've never seen them in the wild. I saw two little whiptails, but I was in the m...

A protest gathering happening in southern Arizona in a couple of weeks. To get there, find Lochiel, AZ on the map and go there. There will probably be some signs indicating how to get to the camp. Please share. Um, 2026, you okay? Do we need to stage an intervention? Besides having to fight literal Nazis and put them in their place again, it's looking like we have to redo the Civil War and put Confederates in their place again as well. Le sigh. If they insist.

Bill the lizard showed back up on the wall today. Just went over and fed him. I'm surprised he's being so scarce. Before it cooled off last fall and he went in hibernation, he would routinely come into the house all the way into the kitchen demanding to be fed in the morning. He does totally remember me though. I just realized something that may indicate a problem: when all the lizards are out, I spend more time in any given day talking to them than I do to humans. #LizardRepo...

Hey y'all, I'm only vaguely familiar with LLMs (being the total hater that I am, doncha know), so maybe someone can help me out for a laugh. I want to trick some company's support chatbot into writing something for me and need help with how to jailbreak it with the right prompts. The task: California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife is requiring a "Bullfrog Management Plan" for my 60' diameter, plastic-lined irrigation water storage pond. I'm...

Does anyone know how to search one's favorite list? I'm looking for a post by someone I follow that I know I favorited, from months ago. I thought I'd bookmarked it, but it's not there. I fave a lot, so a manual search would take forever. TIA

RE: https://post.lurk.org/@shibacomputer/116212328257230121 Practically every paragraph of this could be its own essay. It is so good and worth the time. "Each infrastructure began with promises of liberation and human triumph. But stability calcifies into compliance through legal policy, economic incentives, consolidation and embedded technical defaults. The core of Cyberspace’s calcification is the filesystem: The moment you store a representation of something or someone on a disk,...

RE: https://indieweb.social/@tg/116191259136149635 OMG this so much: on your website's address form, put the ZIP Code first and let the city state and country auto fill. Then below that you put the street address. Far less typing and scrolling through lists of states and countries. Also, ditch the street address auto complete. Just let me type my address and don't make me keep clicking away your incorrect suggestions or give my address to Google.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@zaufanatrzeciastrona/116142452277009011 Oh, more fun uses for LLMs. "Our results show that the practical obscurity protecting pseudonymous users online no longer holds and that threat models for online privacy need to be reconsidered."
