  More proof of #Russia specifically targeting Europe with "cognitive strikes" to disturb public discours. They need the extreme right in power, as -just like Trump- they can control them, and they need to know the EU's military and nuclear secrets if they want to start nuking Ukraine (which they seem to be preparing for...) https://www.occrp.org/en/investigation/leaked-documents-reveal-russian-cognitive-strikes-against-the-west-including-islamophobic-pig-head-attacks-in...

  In the search for something that isn't paint and allows me to do quick and dirty adaptations to figures for courses etc, I came across @Krita . Wow. Just wow. Free, pretty intuitive (more than paint!), a whole set of features for both bitmap and vector, and a nice and helpful community. What's not to like? #FOSS #OpenSource #TechTools https://krita.org/en/

  I've been donating monthly to @wikipedia for years. As of today, that donation is cancelled until this is resolved appropriately. It's only 10 euro, but they won't contribute to this abhorrent treatment of workforce. #Wikipedia #union https://medium.com/@jakeorlowitz/wikipedia-is-doing-the-capitalist-thing-56a393232943

  We used to have software that let you use fill in between lines, and add some text here and there, without having to download full artist suites like Krita (very impressive though). But they seem to be gone. Anyone tips? I just need to fill these circles with different colors and add a letter, that's all. Microshit wants me to log in when "opening in designer", and fuck that. #AskFedi #graphics #imageEditing #editing #FreeSoftware

  RE: https://mastodon.social/@coatless/116514621992544197 Quite unfathomable that Posit basically pointed a Claude bot at an open source project and essentially copied it almost line by line without proper attribution. The "skills" of LLM too often turn out to be copying someone elses work. This is sad but unsurprising. #Posit #LLM #RStats #FOSS

  Students are making a valid point. #Occupy #Ugent #FreePalestine edit: corrected a few typos in the alt text. The right banner reads "69000+ deaths, 0 ties broken" in Dutch.

  So Israel -again- attacks citizens of other nations in international waters, and not a single effort is done to actually protect those citizens. One law for them, one law for the rest of us I guess? https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/4/29/israeli-military-speedboats-block-gaza-bound-aid-ship

  For those who love vinyl, brass and steampunk nutcases : We're doing a crowdfunding for a vinyl of our latest work. If enough people are interested, we can make that happen. #vinyl #music #brassband #Brazzmatazz #crowdfunding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW3ZLIJvsoQ

  Heads up: the new version of @Posit RStudio software (2026.04) has a genAI assistant integrated. It's subscription based, but can be turned off in the settings. It'll be the first time I won't mail the IT department to ask for an update. We'll have to test how easily students can activate their own subscriptions on exam PCs before we even think about updating. If anyone can shed light on enterprise control of settings for this, much appreciated. #RStats #genA...

  @yaxu I get your frustration, but I'd pick latex over a word template every time. At least you see where tags/environments start and end I've worked with a publisher that used word templates for writing a book, and that was two years of formatting hell. Also, equations. Fuck that equation hell in Word.

  For decades climate deniers have been using dodgy statistics to "prove" there's no effect of global warming on "the number of hurricanes". It's never been about the total number. Dr. Masters summarizes the research on how global warming increases the number of _strong_ hurricanes, as hurricanes got stronger over the past decades. #climateChange #climateResearch #weather #science #research #hurricanes https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2026...

  In my search for a setup to introduce an 11 year old to the internet, I came across Firefox policies. It allows me to block settings so the kid can't easily override the default DNS. I tried @Waterfox and theoretically I should be able to do something similar, but couldn't get it to work. If someone can help me, would be nice (prefer water over fire tbh). It's on Linux Mint and I used flatpak for waterfox install. #fediask #linux #browser #waterfox https://www.quippd...

  @jeffcliff define "permission culture"

  @jeffcliff oh wait, that's the CC guy. So yeah, I've read his stuff. That's why I refer time and again to "commercial use". Ever read the licenses of the organisation he founded? You know what the NC stand for? The SA? How do you think your "learning"(as in copying stuff to train big collections of logistic regression to sell back) complies to that stuff? Asking for a friend. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/

  OK, after 2 days of messing around with Linux Mint next to working on a fresh Window 11 enterprise set up for our organisation, I can tell you that Linux Mint is more stable in its behaviour. Whether or not my new Windows laptop wakes up from sleep when docked, is a seemingly random event: sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and there's no way of knowing when it is one or the other. Let's hope #UGent shifts to Linux really soon.

  We're close to reacing 1 million signatures demanding the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in view of Israel’s violations of human rights. If-when- we reach 1 million, the EU parliament will have to discuss the suspension of this agreement in light of the atrocities and war crimes committed by Israel against Palestinians and Lebanese civilians. Question: I'm going to flash a linux distro on an old Dell I have lying around, and I want to have something kids friendly (as in: something a non-tech parent can easily control so their kids don't do silly stuff on the laptop and the interwebs). I wanted to start with a Linux Mint, but if there's some tips and tricks I need to know for setting it up, please tell me. (apart from "teach the kid", bcs we know. But they're kids, remember?) #askFe...

  News is a few months old, but in light of the record Windrose broke in Australia: the Chinese start-up moved headquarters to Antwerp for the sale of its electric trucks. Yes, they look like Tesla semis because that's the best aerodynamic shape. These ones are actually on the market and usable. So let's hope to see many more of those everywhere soon. https://newsroom.portofantwerpbruges.com/en/press-releases/port-of-antwerp-bruges-welcomes-windrose-for-european-assembly-of-ele...
