Watching the #UCIworlds For free, on the CBC! On streets I have ridden on, at least some of them. But I'm on team #EFeducation So nice to see Alison Jackson (my favourite cyclist) back with Mags - who has crashed out!? But lately I've gotten to cheering for Cedrine Kerbaol and Naomi Reugg and they're NOT on Team Canada. Who do I cheer for? #uci #montreal

Okay, there are 2 moose roaming and rummaging in the woods around our campsite. We’re not too scared, but I don’t know what to do. What can you do? We have a fire, and I have told them to go away. We shall see.

Camping in Miquelon Park. Gravel section roads from a Camrose start, no issues. Camp set up, check. Birds scouted on Merlin - check, the usual suspects, no new ones. Supper with carbonara ramen pack, cooked in beef jerky and carrot broth, check. One match fire! Now the party has started.

@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca I was just about to post this picture! I also brought my own brown sugar.

So the R&R Motel in Camrose has a breakfast spread about as good as the wacko weirdo motel in Ponoka. Maybe not quite as much omelets and tater tots, but had breakfast burritos, much more to my taste. The other place did have instant espresso powder (which I think I was the first to use) so I could beef up the coffee. We have the aeropress back in the room.

#yegbike larger area musings, Camrose edition: Coming into town, I had been texting with my daughter about family business. (No texting while cycling, there were many rest breaks). I mentioned that in this long slog of a ride; I was thinking a lot about Boston Pizza for supper. The kidlet has some connections in Camrose, so she asked them to recommend some independent food places. Prime Fried Chicken was the winner, and we had a great supper there. I forgot to add that we had come across great c...

So when in Rocky Mountain House, one should visit Rocky Mountain Bike N Board. And you should listen to Loyal when he tells you of a gravel path out to the Historic Site, What a great little ride! Some paved, some single track, some grass, and to a Historical Fort site! Also you should heed his advice as to what local restaurants are good. We have yet to check that out, but we look forward to tonight’s supper. Rocky Mountain House is a charming town, but the local cuisine is largely the usual f...

OK Mastodon and the larger fediverse, I have succumbed to your charms and have been taking pictures of #fungi. These were found on aging woodpiles in central Alberta in the beginning of the foothills, well east of the Rockies. A fungi-id app identified the vertical facing ones as puffballs, whereas the downward facing ones were identified as ‘Turkey Tail’. I’m assuming they are the same species, any thoughts?

#yegbike commute pm update: In my opinion, the afternoon conditions yesterday, today, and forecast for the next week are absolutely ideal. We earned this! #yegwx

#yegbike commute: pleasantly cool at +13° with mild northwest wind. Paths still full of branches, twigs, and a few stubborn puddles and muddy patches. Street life in the inner city mostly under tarps with one campfire. Traffic medium weekday light, none too annoying. No songbirds out, just ducks and gulls. A few rabbits. Paths mostly empty, a few regular other bike commuters. Fairly ideal ride. #earworm ‘You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio’, Joni Mitchell. Don’t know why the mental radio is playing the...

#yegbike commute: a little bit chilly at +9° with northwest winds. Paths full of tree branches and twigs - how can they have any left? Inner city quiet under tarps, traffic quite light. Other than puddles and mud, a pretty good ride. Not much bird action of any kind. #earworm still ‘Falling Slowly’, Glen Hansard. Damn that motorcycle!

TIL that Max Miller the Republican representative from Ohio and Max Miller the YouTuber whose historical recipe videos I watch regularly are 2 different people. To my great relief.

The #earworm of the day has been officially changed, tragically it is now Glen Hansard, ‘Faliing Slowly’ https://youtu.be/k8mtXwtapX4

#yegbike commute: a little on the warm side at +14°C with negligible wind in overcast skies. Paths mostly good and dry, still muddy in patches, particularly around the low level bridge, and of course branches and twigs all over. Mosquitoes still out, but slightly less than before. Inner city mostly absent, a few people and bike commuters on the paths. Traffic light but medium annoying. #earworm still ‘Falling Slowly’, RIP Glen Hansard.

#yegbike commute: wow, you go away for a few days, and everything goes to heck! A reasonably cool +12°C with light northwest wind. Surfaces a mixed bag of dodging branches, puddles, mud. But mostly dry surfaces. Took the High Level Bridge for safety, will check out Low Level underpass on the way home. Traffic medium light, not too annoying. Few other bike commuters, street life medium active. Not a bad ride, but mindfulness required. Not much bird action, just ducks on the very full ponds. #earw...

One thing I’ve seen for the first time at #calgaryfolkFestival - performers at the workshops taking their phones out to video the other performers on stage. #cfmf

My #calgaryfolkFestival find last night: Madison Cunningham. At first I thought, ‘oh another young piano chanteuse’ - for about 15 seconds. One who seemingly absorbed Judee Sills and Joni Mitchell! And accompanied by one guy who alternated between bassoon, clarinet, flute, and Mellotron Strings. What a fantastic set.https://www.madisoncunningham.com/ #cfmf

Currently Japanese Shamisens are tuning up with banjos for the soundcheck, and it’s hard to tell which is which.

I really enjoy the Playing For Change video series, where musicians busking around the world jam together through video conference type technology. The #CalgaryFolkFestival is so international in its lineup that the workshop stages end up becoming like that. #cfmf

#yegbike commute; much better day at +15°C with slight southwest breeze. Air is quite smoky, sun rose red. Traffic back to medium busy levels, inner city street life quite active. Paths medium busy, regular bike commuters out and about. Surfaces mostly dry, except for all the puddles. Mosquitoes abound. AThe commute report will be off for a week as we head down to Calgary for the Folk Festival. No bike riding anticipated, but bike shops wi be visited. #earworm ‘You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio’, Joni...

#yegbike commute: warmish at +16°C, but a northwest wind and light rain takes care of that. Regular bike commuters out, innner city mostly under tarps. Traffic light, at least. Also Low Level Bridge was open. Rain and mosquitoes! #earworm ‘Misery’, XTC

#yegbike commute: lovely temperature of +9° with negligible northwest wind makes for a fantastic riding day. Traffic surprisingly light, the regular bike commuters were out, paths medium full of joggers and dog walkers. Inner city medium busy and loud. Only complaint in the amount of branches, puddles and muddy patches. #earworm ‘Purple Rain’ by you know who.

At work on a Sunday. Wondering about the various Christian Music channels. Rather than sounding like modern pop and R’n’B, shouldn’t it sound like klezmer and be in Hebrew or Aramaic?

#yegbike commute: a lovely temperature of +8°C with no wind. Surfaces mostly dry, some puddles and a bit of muddy gravel. Traffic still quite light. Paths had the regular joggers and dog walkers, a few bike commuters. Took the downtown route, sad to see the east side of High Level still closed. No new birds, less songbirds than a few weeks ago. #earworm ‘Powder Finger’, Neil Young

#yegbike commute: again, hot & muggy at +13°C with slight northwest wind. Paths freshly puddled, wet branches and gravel/mud patches keep one mindful. Inner city present but subdued, maybe most in their sidewalk tents. Traffic again light, really nice. Paths mostly empty, the few regular bike commuters on their own journeys. Songbirds not too much in voice, perhaps it was the coyote who seemed quite okay communing with me, from a safe distance. With the coyote, No Regrets. Bringing to mind a...

#yegbike commute: quite warm at +15°C with slight northwest breeze. Paths full of little branches, and many many puddles. Paths mostly empty, perhaps the dog walkers and joggers are avoiding the clouds of mosquitoes. They are legion. Traffic light, the riding itself was not too bad. Smokey skies have an obscured orange sun in the sky. A warm and muggy ride, but overall good. Not many songbirds singing, hopefully they are busy eating mosquitoes. #earworm ‘Tokyo’, Bruce Cockburn. #yegbike commute: good temperature of +10°C, but a medium gusty northwest wind cools things down. Surfaces all good, a fair amount joggers and dog walkers on the paths. Medium amount of other bikes, inner city quiet. All the bike paths were still there, and I detected no animosity from the light traffic. Not many songbirds singing, mostly ducks, geese and gulls about. Not a bad ride. #earworm ‘Come In From The Cold’, Joni Mitchell.

#yegbike commute: quite comfortable temperature of +8°C with a lighter northwest wind than yesterday. Surfaces good, fair amount of walkers, joggers and other bikes on the paths. Took the High Level Bridge and then 113th Street up to Kingsway and then Princess Elizabeth Avenue. Nice to have proper separated bike route most of the way, at the expense of 4 extra minutes over the 96th Street route. Not sure if 4 minutes is worth skipping the Grierson Hill climb. Anyway, songbirds were more present...

#yegbike commute: quite comfortable temperature of +11°C with the slightest of easterly winds. Surfaces all good, a fair amount of joggers and dog walkers on the paths. Only a few other bikes, and light traffic which was well behaved. The songbirds are out in full voice this morning, and in Greisbach the ruby-winged blackbirds were singing, one of my favourites. Pretty good riding conditions overall, for today at least! #earworm ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, as covered by the Communards. https://yo...
