Reside: Vancouver. Biased because I mostly grew up here and am lucky enough to still live here but I really do think it’s something special. Vacation: Probably Qing Huang Dao. Gorgeous Chinese beach city that I’ve only ever been to twice in my childhood, but it’s also really nostalgic for that reason. Party (hardest one for me because I don’t party): Wanted to say New York or Vegas because nothing in Canada really compares to those, but with current events and my skin colour I’m going with...

No. There used to be some nice things on Windows, but Windows 11 has thoroughly ruined them.

    > The dinner, a black-tie annual tradition bringing together Washington's political and media elite, known colloquially as "nerd prom," Attended only by people who spent their high school and adult years bullying nerds for being smarter than them. > An image circulating widely on social media purportedly shows Allen wearing an "Israel Defense Forces" (IDF) shirt. Ooh can't wait to not hear about this from all the Western sources who would have freaked the fu...

    > but the troops should have been warmed not to expose themselves to danger like this. Wat? Pretty sure they knew what they were getting into when they signed up for the fucking army.

Fedora gets no funding and all the karen behaviour in their issues channel I bet. Working with a giant corporation as an open source project sounds like actual hell.

    > Allies: Israel In other news, a galaxy far far away has formed a new, better rebel group. Allies: The Empire. Also "anti-some other group" is not an ideology. Stop calling that by itself an ideology. "I don't like this group and don't support them." Cool, but what *do* you support then? What makes you different? Ideologies are positive assertions about what you actually believe in and what you would actually do. Negative assertions like "anti-whatever grou...

A smartphone is a handheld computer. Why should it be restricted to what software the company arbitrarily decides should be allowed to run on it? Also suggests she's a technically minded person who likes to know how things work and is not satisfied with a black box. Jailbreaking uncovers the complex machine a smartphone truly is, something that Apple tries very hard to hide behind its patronizingly simple interface.

The Reddit culture of just hating on random people's objectively harmless hobbies/interests/preferences. Think "snark" subreddits and similar. And if you call them out on it suddenly you're the problem. Channel that hate toward things that actually do harm if anything.

parallel, easy multithreading right in the command line. This is what I wish was included in every programming language’s standard library, a dead simple parallelization function that takes a collection, an operation to be performed on the members of that collection, and optionally the max number of threads (should be the number of hardware threads available on the system by default), and just does it without needing to manually set up threads and handlers. inotifywait, for seeing what files a...

This is a physics question. But the current laws of physics do not allow for going backwards in time, certainly no way for anything to interact with a past version of itself, so even if, IF it was possible under some future model that will replace the current one, there's no way to predict what would happen with the current model because the current model says it doesn't happen. It's like asking pre-Copernicus physics to calculate the movement of different star systems around a gala...

For those not in the know, the original post was about how someone kept losing their outdoor cats to coyotes and kept adopting more, so was basically feeding cats to coyotes. Keep your cats indoors folks, will keep them from killing birds and keep bigger things from killing them. Don't want your pet subjected to the food chain? Don't make them participate in it. Also, now that I think about it, how did the shelter not blacklist them after the second cat they lost? They kept just giving...

岁 "sui" in Mandarin. The word itself is a quantity, so you put the number before it, like 二十二岁 for 22 years old. When you're describing the age of a person, that person *is*, not has, that quantity. So "I am 22" would be 我是二十二岁 ("wo shi er shi er sui").

From my “watched a YouTube video” understanding of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, a consistent mathematical system cannot prove its own consistency, and any seemingly consistent system could always have a fatal contradiction that invalidates the whole system, and the only way to know would be to find the contradiction. So if at some point our current system of math gets proven inconsistent, what happens next? Can we tweak just the inconsistent part and have everything else still be valid or w...
