You have just landed on the only angle that could get me to watch a movie about bitcoin: macabre schadenfreude.

English and Swedish are common examples of where gender neutral pronouns have developed that sometimes meet ideological opposition from conservative thinkers but otherwise work largely fine in common parlance. They don't make a lot of people look up and wonder what was said. They and hon don't cause a fuzz because they are established to a sufficient degree. Now imagine that wasn't the case and in English we wanted to land on "shup" as a pronoun. I talked with Billy and shu...

Lemmy is part of the fediverse. On the fediverse you are your own algorithm. So either you have curated your feed to be very political or you're on the local feed of your instance, which has a lot of political posts. But you signed up there. Either way, you're there by choice. Curate your own feed. I get lots of stuff that isn't political. Just keep in mind you don't get reddit user numbers over here so not every niche nonpolitical subject has found a viable community. Yet.

It's faster than a transaction via QR code. Also, the chip isn't just restricted to handling payments. It can be used as key fob for your car or on your smart lock at home or at the hotel you're staying at.

They don't wake up one morning and yell small government. The more liberal social frog inside of you will also get boiled eventually by imperceptible temperature changes in the water over a long time. Conservative thinking isn't generally synonymous with xenophobia. It's more about low taxes, no handouts to anyone, tough on crime, that sort of thing. The xenophobia aspect is a perversion of that, which sadly isn't uncommon but not a forgone conclusion generally speaking. The fact...

Many reasons. The older one gets, the more stuff if not wealth one has acquired, the more one stands to lose. That has most people make a turn for conservative viewpoints if they weren't there already. Also, as the Peter Principle in the workplace (I paraphrase: everybody gets eventually promoted to a position they are not qualified to do well) old people get to an age where they overestimate their worldly knowledge. Getting old is shit. Your joints hurt, hair grows out of weird spots, peo...

Because you are new, you should read the forum rules before you post. Your post is in danger of being thrown out because you are asking a question in the "ad nauseam" category. It's new to you but not to the people who are here already. I think there are also links to finding communities in the rules. On the fediverse you need to be your own algorithm. That means you need to search on your own and try stuff. The beauty of Lemmy is that there are a gazillion communities for all the...

Have another go at reading the post. The question wasn't what's stopping the US from building both, the question was whether OP's explanation does justice to the status quo. My first sentence includes the word "also," indicating that this is additional information that I found wasn't sufficiently weighed in the single paragraph. This is a thread and I read other people pointing out other things. So I didn't.

That tends to be the case though. Even in Europe that's true in many cases. I think so far only France has legislation on the books that makes it illegal for airfare to beat trainfare under a certain distance.

The geographical distances also favor air traffic over anything on the ground. If the jet engine hadn't come around, North America would have a great high speed rail network today. Ignoring recent events in the middle east and their effect on pricing, even in Japan a flight from Tokyo to Osaka will beat the bullet train fare if you book it a month or more ahead of time. And that's not on a budget airline. Japan gets a lot of praise for its bullet train network. But it's really just...

> How is that legal? Those considerations are always a trade-off. How much government should interfere with an industry, especially one that's been around since we monkeys climbed down from the trees? There isn't just the plight of alcoholics to consider. An advertisement ban would affect business and jobs. It would take a considerable chunk out of the advertising market that when gone world affect media, an already struggling industry. And AA doesn't quite have the deep pockets...

The OSs aren't forks as far as in aware. So this turd in the water will flow downstream and then it depends. Can they excise this dev database checkup? Or will they fork (or at least try)? I think we have to wait and see. The availability of apps will probably decrease. Although with the latest advanced flow of the turd that will allow installation after a 24h cooling off period, a restart, a piece of your soul, and your firstborn it will probably not be a bad as we had initially thought. S...

I read through that last link and then the first comment is asking why this AI wall of text. There is also very little evidence meat on that bone. A user did this, a user got that. That’s not receipts, that’s just more claims. The claims of censorship are non sensical to me. You can still post most of that stuff, just not on that instance. An instance isn’t a democracy and no one has the right to be heard there no matter what. Your right is to go elsewhere. It’s a living room sofa problem. If...

The people who fact check news for a living are journalists. They exist on a spectrum from dubious to trustworthy. You’ll have you find some that you like. While it is possible today to check a lot of stuff yourself online, you can’t do it all. And if you are, you already are doing a journalist’s job.

A British person with a German passport is also a German citizen. So they can't not help them if they have the means. ~~I don't know about the Brits. The Germans have some tight rules about dual citizenship. It will be an exceedingly low number of people who qualify legally on both sides for dual citizenship of these two countries.~~ As the revolutionary guard troops surround Dubai, this probably would not matter. They would try to get people out and I'm sure both Brits and Germans...

I don't think this would've happened though if there hadn't been the societal impetus that aided adoption. The singular they may have been around since Chaucer or Shakespeare - ~30 years ago, people didn't really use it. There was far more "he or she" going on, that's now been more commonly replaced with a "they," also because it's shorter. English benefits from the fact that the neutral pronoun slots right in to the existing grammar. Other languages s...

Before we gloat too much - and let's be honest, we all wanna - CEOs tend to be of a certain vintage. I remember how I could program the VCR and my parents decidedly could not. Old folks' opinions may be less relevant here. Bringing all these tools in is basically giving magic beans to cave people. How would they know how to use them effectively? All the while trying to figure out if they are indeed magic. This, sadly, could just be the anomaly before the numbers go up. This isn't pr...

As a bit of a left field addition to other good suggestions already in this thread: Rescind the fiduciary duty of any officer in a corporation to increase shareholder value no matter what. Exceptions must be made for cases where it would hurt the environment (anywhere on the planet and judging by the strictest state laws in effect), cause excessive loss of jobs, or hurt consumers. I think a lot of problems of late stage capitalism are downstream consequences from this stupid law.

>Would that mean I'll be getting more in dollars due to that having high value? You posted the answer yourself. Every central bank designs its own bills. The US chose to be boring, bland, and hostile to people with visual impairments. The reason why they won't change that in a hurry is because it would necessitate an expensive switch in vending machines to handle different size bills. They could change the color but greenback is their brand. European currencies have pretty much alwa...

If nothing else helps, imagine how you tickle them on the tip of their dumb nose with an imaginary, invisible feather. Imagine the surprised look when they don't know what's happening. It's so annoying and they don't have a clue where it's coming from. They have fucked with the wrong person with an overactive imagination! By now, you've zoned out far enough to ignore any jabs coming your way. You wear the self-satisfied smile that only imaginary feather ticklers know. Ar...

I'm just spit balling here. Is it possible that the intent of this post is not to have a discussion about OSs but to boost the YouTube views? It's just a vibe I'm getting. New account, very eager to reply, posting this out of the blue. If the video is on YouTube, they make a thumbnail pulling a dumb face, and it gets presented in a forum like this with a whiff of controversy about it, personally, I'll refuse to look at it.

I have never heard of him. In general, I don't find YouTube a reliable source for anything controversial. I think the CIA falls under that umbrella. So I would be very skeptical.

You can *help* stop your elected dickheads. Protest, general strike, a constant barrage of your elected officials with dissent. They were bombing schools in your name. Iran has been under the longest internet blackout in history (if you don't count North Korea). The things that trickle out from there are scarce and that little bandwidth may be better used to collect evidence of atrocities, ironically committed either by the regime or the US/Israel coalition. The current top 40 may be less i...
