I wrote about AI distillation, the Kimi K3 drama, and why distillation should be treated as a boon for AI labs, not an attack. https://eshumarneedi.com/2026/07/22/us-threatens-to-sanction-china.html

This is really ill-conceived. The government shouldn’t dictate R&D, not because it doesn’t have good intentions — I agree with the premise that lidar is requisite for good FSD — but because it’s too slow to adapt to changes in technology. Just look at the DMA. https://www.theverge.com/transportation/962309/new-jersey-robotaxi-bill-lidar-tesla

@marcoarment@mastodon.social Probably. And I actually think it has very little to do with LLMs. I feel like we’ve reached peak programming language.

I am of the personal opinion that Gurman should issue an apology — or at least, an acknowledgment of his error — to the Financial Times editors. They were right, almost on the money, and he was not. https://daringfireball.net/2026/04/delicious_claim_chowder_regarding_the_cook-ternus_ceo_transition

Props to GPT-5.5, it gave me such a good edit of my Tim Cook/John Ternus article in 57 seconds while Opus took 10 minutes and came up with almost nothing. (I obviously review all edits, and none of them change the content of my human writing.)

oh? this is inefficient code? but I used Garry Tan’s GStack and Claude Opus 4.7 on ultrathink!

Stress-testing some new code in my app and currently discovering features I didn’t even know it had. (It converts the citation Markdown to an AttributedString, allowing you to pass emphasis, links, and anything else into the text fields.)

New article: Apple’s company culture straddles stability and ambition. After a 15-year run of stability and predictability, Tim Cook has given his successor a company aching for ambition. I wrote about Cook’s highs, lows, and what this means for John Ternus’s tenure. https://eshumarneedi.com/2026/04/26/welcome-back-think-different.html

OpenAI’s biggest problem is that they’re giving compute away to power users and normal people don’t want to pay for ChatGPT. This is not going to end well. Anthropic correctly identified this and effectively stopped subsidizing Opus 4.7 tokens, especially for users on lower tiers.

From what I see, there seems no way to completely cancel a subscription you’ve “committed” to, even if you’re willing to pay a cancellation fee (like Adobe). Only “if your payment fails” will you be released from the commitment (which would bar you from any IAPs). 🖕 https://www.macrumors.com/2026/04/27/app-store-monthly-subscriptions-12-month-commitment/

I wrote about OpenAI and Anthropic’s token subsidization problem and why the current subscription plans will become unsustainable in (probably) the near future: https://eshumarneedi.com/2026/04/28/ais-token-subsidization-problem.html

I think the only time I truly feel sympathy for Tim Cook is whenever I see a photo of him at some kind of White House affair, alone.

I guess this is what happens when you focus all of your product development on Codex, a product almost nobody outside of San Francisco has ever heard of. https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/920476/openai-chatgpt-downloads-slow-down-ipo

Here’s my take on the Vision Pro team stuff: While I don’t think the entire team has been dismantled, I do think a lower-priced Vision Air or whatever is off the table. Maybe their software people have moved over to Federighi’s team as the product stabilized. But they’re all definitely still working on *some* Vision product, probably the AI glasses for later this year / next year, and the AR glasses far into the future. https://daringfireball.net/2026/04/on_the_future_of_apples_vision_platform

Pretty draconian that refusing to provide an ID or credit card in the UK when you set up your iPhone means iOS will literally block you from visiting certain websites in the web browser. These age verification laws are nuts. https://www.theverge.com/tech/900284/apple-ios-26-4-uk-age-verification

New bug report / feedback for Apple #SwiftUI engineers: Please allow omitting color information (or preferably, most attributes) from rich text copied via SwiftUI Text modified with .textSelection(.enabled). SwiftUI copies text to the clipboard in the primary text color. E.g., if dark mode is enabled, the copied text will be white. This makes the copied text illegible when pasted into word processors. Solution: Please omit the color attribute from the text. Filed as FB21959615.
