It's #BandcampFriday! Recommend something by an artist I've not heard of and which isn't doof-doof shit, and I promise to buy at least one recommendation.

If you don't follow @roots@stefanbohacek.online then you are in a state of sin. The drawings are beautiful. They also explain why the grass in all my local parks was burnt to a yellow crisp this summer - with bright green patches of weeds all over. Compare the root systems of https://images.wur.nl/digital/collection/coll13/id/385/rec/2 and https://images.wur.nl/digital/collection/coll13/id/291/rec/1 with that of https://images.wur.nl/digital/collection/coll13/id/1434/rec/1. A chonky computer today, when you adjust for inflation, costs about the same as a chonky computer ten years ago, and is much chonkier. Including in terms of memory and solid-state storage. The recent memory price spike looks to me more like a reversion of anomalously low prices.

Incredibly Lazy #Tomato #Soup. So good that it should be capitalised. Dice and fry onions, add a load of garlic paste (yes, paste, not actual garlic - remember, we're being lazy), add a load of roughly chopped tomatoes, some finely chopped basil, thyme and rosemary, and a beef stock cube. Wait a bit. #soup #cooking

I just noticed that #NovayaZemlya is basically the same shape as #NewZealand and also has pretty much the same spelling. No wonder so many people forget to print it off the coast of Australia, when they've already printed it off the north coast of Greater Ukraine.

Well, I have thoroughly failed to do anything #NetBSD-ish with my dinky little #Vortex86 machine. Even if I attach a real VGA monitor nothing appears on the screen so I can't even check BIOS settings. Gonna relegate that to a rainy winter day project. @murble I don't suppose you remember doing anything funky to get it working when you had it do you?

I have a rule to never *ever* buy anything immediately just because it looks cool, or is a great deal, or "this special offer must end soon". Anyway, these looked cool, and arrived today from Aliexpress! #notepad #windows95 #PureEvilReified #RetroComputing #hashtag

An open source project just fixed a bug that I reported 14 years ago. Surprisingly for such an old bug, the bug fix is still useful to me! https://github.com/pjcj/Devel--Cover/pull/602 Thanks @pjcj@mastodon.cloud! #perl #CodeCoverage

Re earlier toot ... just like with #BSD, new releases of #perl are BORING. They just work. Absolutely disgusting levels of backward compatibility. Shouldn't be allowed.

• View post

Disgusted, as usual, about how #BSD just isn't *fun*. I have upgraded two #FreeBSD VMs' OSes this evening and ... it just worked. I didn't have to swear at anything, or read the source code, or knit my own boot loader from twigs. The BSDs really should learn some lessons from other more funnerer OSes.

@losttourist @aroundthehills I have some sympathy with this. Perhaps we can compromise and start tagging pictures of terrible haircuts with #SuperBowl to annoy both the gridiron fans and the ornithologists.

I've been playing with #Github #Copilot as more than just fancy tab-completion in my editor. This will annoy many people. I agree with most of them on most things. I agree that people responsible for the production of code should think carefully about the code. They should value #readability, #maintainability, #testability etc. I agree that some ways of using #AI for coding are just terrible practice. I just don't think that all AI use is inherently evil. https://dev.to/drhyde/g...

I wish #bash supported programmable globbing like what it does with #TabCompletion.

So my earlier #VagueToot about #bash #globbing ... I want to be able to specify something like "all the directories which don't contain a file called wibble.yml". #extglob can find files that don't match a `!(pattern)`, but I want to match the absence of such files in a directory. eg, if foo/bar, baz/bar and barf/ exist I want to be able to `ls -ld [magic goes here]` to get info about directory barf/ only. Yes, I know other ways of doing this. I want to do it u...

Re prev toots, hypothetically, if I were to write a library called libextextglob that would grovel over an array of strings (like, say, #argv) and do horrible things to it if it sees globby characters that the shell didn't expand, would you think it was ... After my recent playing around with #Copilot, I thought I'd take a look at my Github billing report to see how much I'd used. I have, this month, used US$5.80 worth of Copilot ... and US$870 of actions. Most of those computrons got burned when #Dependabot pushed branches and then when it created pull requests so that it could whine at me about point releases of stuff like #CrossPlatformActions (https://github.com/cross-platform-actions/action). 1/n

I got a #SunMicrosystems type 6 #keyboard a few days ago. When it arrived it was in good shape but somehow while sitting in my pile of keyboards one of the hinged feet has just disappeared and I can't find it. Alas! Alack! Woe is me! Don't suppose anyone has one that they can spare from a broken device do they? Or know where I can buy a replacement? #Sun #WorldAltTextChampionshipEntry
