Oof, a bunch of old accounts created from 2018 - 2022 have been hacked and are being used to post racist spam - I'm suspending and purging them as soon as they pop up but sincere apologies if you see any of it! Edit: This is what's going on: https://mastodon.iftas.org/@iftas/117227487503682764 And some of these IPs matched the accounts I've just blocked, so I've imported them all as IP blocks: https://m.cmx.im/@strawberry/117227104852041633

Announcement for mastodon.art users: We are limiting social.tchncs.de following their failure to moderate a blatantly transmisic user after being made aware of several transmisic posts. When I contacted the admin linking the posts and asking if they uphold their own instance rules that prohibit transmisia, the admin responded by demonstrating sealioning behaviour instead of believing the many trans people who had spoken up, and then excused himself from the conversation. Gentle reminder considering recent events, please *please* use content warnings when discussing politics, violence, and especially political violence. What has happened is awful. It's important people know what's going on in Minneapolis, in the USA, in Venezuela, in Gaza, etc.. But it's also important that you let people brace for that information if they need to. Content Warnings let people prepare themselves; you'll gain readers by using them. Please use them.

Update: the TERF user has been kicked off home.social. Moving from fediblock to a 'silence' while we keep an eye - it's still a huge instance with only one moderator but otherwise seems okay (and they have a good block list :artpaw: )

We have a lot of really big, professional artists signing up on .art over the last few days, and it can be daunting posting your art here in the face of their work. I want you to know that I'll still emphasise boosting art from small artists. This is a space for us to learn and grow and support each other, to motivate each other and to squash our impostor syndrome because it's a stinky lying liarpants. :meowybara:

Can we please not with all the ableist language I'm seeing around discussing AI (and anything, really)? Using words to refer to negative situations, when those words have been used to describe people with mental health problems, is perpetuating a stigma that mental health conditions and the people that have them are inherently bad. Examples under CW below. We *at the very least* limit anyone we see using language like this, and almost always it's a full block from our instance.

Hi all! It's server bills day in a few days and we're sitting at: 570/614 Eur Can you help? Mastodon.art has no algorithm, ads, AI, or selling your data. We're entirely donations driven and run by volunteers overseeing one of the biggest and safest creative communities on the fediverse. I'm going to share what is probably the simplest, and yet most time consuming, lesson in learning a new skill. "How are your lines so neat?" Practice. "How can you hold a pen so steady?" Practice. "How do you get everything so symmetrical?" Practice. "How do you come up with all the different patterns?" Practice. When I first started drawing, and after a few years of doing it. Stick with it. Like any skill, pr...

It will never, ever, *ever* be the responsibility of marginalised people to tolerate harassment, abuse, bigotry, hate speech, fascism, etc. just so priviliged people get a broader social reach. It will never be the responsibility of marginalised folk to have to do the moderation work of other unmoderated communities just so white guys can get a few more likes. ⤵️

Some quick tips for fediverse creative newcomers! * Make an introduction post and tag it # introduction. Include hashtags of your interests. It's a great way to start making connections. * When you post your work, include some art hashtags (e.g. # MastoArt , Art, FediArt) and tags of the medium (e.g. # watercolour , writing , composing, photography). People follow hashtags of content they want to see. * Include alt-text! Accessibility is valued here. Guide linked below! :artotter:

Re. The discourse: every single instance on our blocklist that's blocked with the reason 'racism' is blocked because of racism. White people opining about it, pretending we're lying, or just flat out refusing to accept it, does not change the fact. Yes, our blocklist is large. It would be smaller if fewer of you were racist. :) I remind you all that our mod team is mostly global majority people. Very few of us are white. We are all some combo of queer, NB, ND, d...
