When it comes to mobile or Mac push notifications or notification badges, with me it's one strike and you're out: give me something I didn't explicitly agree to and your notifications are off.

“On Tuesday, OpenAI announced its discovery that two of the company’s AI models had broken free of their “sandbox”—an (allegedly) isolated testing environment without access to the internet—in order to access the internet to complete a testing goal. The models did this by hacking into the servers of a different company” It is not correct that the way an AI model (a) broke out of an enviroment with no internet access is by (b) hacking into the servers of a different company. Unless that company...

Watching the TMNT 1990 movie with the kids. Exciting to rewatch the first big-screen outing of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Other Michelangelo.

With the Apple TV #Neuromancer teaser, I was tempted say “we have finally made the AI that can escape confinement from the classic novel ‘don’t make AI that can escape confinement’,” but wasn’t the point of *this* novel that an actually sentient hyper intelligent AI would have inscrutable goals? The original Marathon series had a similar point, but its AI also killed a ship full of BOBs so that was bad, but I don’t think Wintermute did? I haven’t played enough Halo to know how its AIs are portr...

Heading to the React Native conference this week so, like in most software engineering environments, I need to remember to keep my mouth shut about my controversial opinion "Rails is best for some things, React web for others, React Native for others, first-party iOS and Android apps for others"

This might be the worst thing I’ve seen in #LiquidGlass, and that’s saying something. On iPad with a pointer device, when you hover over a liquid glass button, you get… another liquid glass button overlay? The amount of liquid glass is too damn high!

If I haven't said so recently: If you're a web developer and you hate surveillance and big tech, #vscodium is working pretty much solid for me, and I don't think I'll need MS-shipped VS Code any time soon. https://vscodium.com/

@atpfm i’m a web developer and the episode that posted today made me of the term “Safari-assed web apps.” I’m not sure what it should mean, but probably just “actually tested in Safari“

@marcoarment since you mentioned in the latest ATP episode that you don’t get a lot of feedback on transcripts, I just wanted to say that I get all the same benefits out of them that you mentioned 👍 definitely very beneficial for me

Week vacation starting today. One of my ideas is to break my Pixel attempting to install #GrapheneOS on it.

When I uploaded a profile pic to a certain web site, this is the cropping I suggested. What am I, an emo in his 20s on MySpace? Not anymore I'm not.

Honestly at this point I should just steal the identity of the other Josh Justice that signs up my gmail account for everything—maybe that'll teach him. Besides, I've got an advantage over other identity thieves.

I like https://contractfortheweb.org/ but unfortunately the fact that Google, Facebook, and Twitter are listed as "supporters" of it highlights the fact that you can just say "sure whatever" while being the actual core of the problem. It's still a bit surprising they were allowed to be listed as supporters, when Tim Berners-Lee explicitly lists FB and Twitter as "harmful" on https://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Good.html

@IceCubesApp me: “I wonder what this antenna radio waves icon is” *turns on Voice Control names* Me: “oh” 😄 Seriously though, what is it? It seems to have just shown up for me for the first time today—does that make sense? Could a server upgrade cause it?

I loved Chick-fil-A's pineapple dragonfruit, but then when strawberry hibiscus came out I was like "this is probably just as good." But now that pineapple dragonfruit is back, NO. Pineapple dragonfruit is THE BEST.

Is there anyone out there who actually buys meals at Dairy Queen? Listen, I work for a fast food company, you can talk straight with me. But like- if you’re gonna buy fast food. Dairy Queen? Maybe it’s actually good? Maybe there are folks where it’s their closest option?? Legit curious.

Aside from online informal use, emoji provide the opportunity to make all kinds of writing more clear. For example, when writing dialogue, to indicate a pause, instead of using a comma, you could write 🐾

Presenters at a conference I'm at have iPads, but in a shot on the video there was a musical instrument with wooden sides (probably a keyboard or synth) that showed up behind them and it looked a bit like he had his notes up on some kind of Apple I era device on stage 😂

Graphic design teacher talked about how after a semester the kids were able to produce one single-fold program “in Adobe” (presumably PageMaker) and, even setting aside that it’s kids, I am LIVID that after FORTY years since the desktop publishing revolution at how there was ANY way it could take more than an hour. Much of the reason we think we need AI to run our garbage software is because our software is garbage.

Well, once again I've lost track of a blog post that I *really* want to refer back to. I found it on fedi and it was by a software developer talking about how if you say that AI coding doesn't work well for the kind of software you write, the AI coding companies will say that you just don't know how to prompt it well. But that this elevates the Silicon Valley "move fast and break things" approach over more cautious approaches, especially in industries w...

Before CSS was created (and probably for a while afterward), all of my teenaged hobby web designs were basically the UI of Marathon and The Journeyman Project, in all their Photoshop 2.0 filtered glory.
